Have a Drink On Me: adamfoxie*blog Essays About Drinking
“Always do sober what you said you'd do drunk. That will teach you to keep your mouth shut.” Ernest Hemingway
Have a Drink On Me
“Nice to see you here Jack. It’s been a real shitty day! Nice to see you too Denis. I know what you mean. Here Jack, have a drink on me.”
There are so many reasons of why people drink. Drinking in itself need not be a problem for the majority of people. But for some, alcohol is the forbidden fruit. It’s the fix, it’s the bomb! It’s something that some of us can’t stop doing. There lies the problem.
One might drink to feel relax and loose some inhibitions. But one can be an asshole, which goes with loosing your inhibitions and doing, saying things you normally would not do... Still if that is all you do, then you would go to bed and not do it again until your next birthday...then may be drinking would not be so bad for you. Not good, but not too bad as long as you don’t become violent and punch someone else or besides becoming stupid you decide to go for a drive, which is stupid, stupid. If you get into a problem because of drinking, then that would teach you that you do have a problem. As many have learned in ‘drinking and driving school’ if alcohol ever is giving you a problem, then you have a problem with alcohol. But I’m not that kind of driver, so that’s not where I driving right now.
Drinking is only social if there is a social occasion and the main reason is to do something other than drinking. Any other drinking is not social, but personal. Whether you are with a bunch of buddies or by yourself. It is personal because you are drinking for very personal reasons. What are those? Let me get the science out of the way first, so we can continue our chat.
Reasons why someone might drink too much. By the way too much could be half a pint or one drink depending of what you do after words. In other words, how it affects you.
1.Friends
2.Compulsion
3.Depression
4.Inhibitions
5. Genetics (Research by the Human Genome Project has shown that the tendency to drink too much alcohol may be genetic).
I don’t think I need to go over no. 1-4, Friends, Compulsion,Depression, Inhibitions. If you know anything about alcohol drinking, you at least know what those definitions are.
I would like to concentrate on the personal reason(s) of why a person might drink. That involves all of the other ones, except may be genetics. Genetics is too new, but soon a blood test would show whether you have the Gene or not. In which case if you have the gene you just might not drink! Or at least be aware that the ‘buggy man’ is right behind you, So Beware!
Before we get to that scientific point of advancement, we already can more or less tell if it’s on your genes or not.
Did or does your daddy or mom drank, or drink a lot? . Do you have siblings that are alcoholics? If there answer is yes...well I hate to tell you my dear reader, but chances are, is on your genetics.
Coming back to the personal reason(s) of why people drink after they have found out that drinking is bad for them. I say it’s personal because the reason a person drinks is very personal to that individual. More so that eating to sustain one selves. For instance the drinking is done to satisfy a need that has nothing to do with nutrition. It is a hole that has to be filled. It’s a loneliness that compels satisfaction even if the individual is sorrounded by people, even love ones. No longer does the individual in this situation has full control of this disease. It’s an infection that advances until the individual has been taken over and there is nothing left. I understand that there are many classes of drinkers. Like the binge drinker, the bar drinker, the closet drinker, the workaholic drinker, the no working at all drinker, etc, etc.
The point of this article is not to cure anybody or come out with a supernova idea that will make people stop by just reading it. I wish!
The purpose of the article is a reminder to people of their drinking, to remind them of why they drink. Once you are able to figure out why you are acting compulsively towards someone or something. Once you have dig up inside of you and found out why, then you are not powerless anymore.
You not powerless, because knowledge is power! It gives you a choice to take. Whether you take the right choice is very ‘personal’ it’s up to you. What is this choice that I am talking about? To know why you are not able to walk, gives you the choice of the right therapy to use. To know your spine is broken and you will never walk, then you make choices that allows you to be independent and live a fulfilled life. Whether is a wheel chair or prosthetics, you can use certain tools to bring you back to fulfillment in your life.
If you figure out that you are drinking because of a loss you suffered or a hole in your psychic that was never fulfill, then you can take the steps and put a plan of action of how you are going to deal with this decease. The very first step is to realize that you ‘have’ a problem. Secondly is to figure out ‘why’ you have the problem. The third is to ‘develop’ a plan Have-Why-Develop. HWD.
With the help of others or by yourself, you need to find out how you are going to deal with this decease you have. I don’t like calling it a disease because it not the type of disease that make you disabled and permits you to ride the Bus and have other riders give you the seat reserved for the elderly and handicapped. It is not that kind of disease. It is a missing link in your psychic that was not able to control what per haves others might. By the way if non habit drinkers had faced what you faced, they would now be you. So this is not to put someone in front of anybody else. It is personal. It takes personal decisions that a counselor or psychiatrist can not make for you. What I’m talking about is the moment of truth in which for a change you are honest with your self and are able to enable your self of the personal knowledge that can save your life...as long as you make the right choices. The moment in which you go searching of ‘why’ you drink.
I wish you good luck if you are giving this article to someone else to read or is for you to read and think of the point that is being made here. This is no replacement for anybody in any therapy. It is a personal finding of mine. My own theory by seeing alcoholics both destroy them selves and redeemed themselves. No religion or program can do that for anybody else, unless the person involves confronts the devils inside.
I have study alcoholism for the past 10 years or so. My mom and dad did not really drink, nor most of my sisters, but I have two brothers, both dead now, out of four boys, that were alcoholics from early on. They were both abusive and bad brothers. But they were also bad sons and fathers and husbands. They both died awful alcohol related deaths. I am convinced that if it were not for their drinking they would have been more productive and better persons.
I’m very aware of this disease and how it destroys lives every day.
