Staying Married to Defend Straight Marriage
October 4, 2010
That seems to be the crux of at least one evangelical argument. According to a post onPolitics Daily, the president of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, R. Albert Mohler, Jr. says that while fighting gay marriage is important, it’s hard to justify using the base that it destroys the ’sanctity of marriage’ when so many evangelical Christians find their marriages ending in divorce.
“divorce harms many more lives than will be touched by homosexual marriage.”“The real scandal is the fact that evangelical Protestants divorce at rates at least as high as the rest of the public. Needless to say, this creates a significant credibility crisis when evangelicals then rise to speak in defense of marriage.”
But will this really change anything? Even if the divorce rate amongst straight couples drops now that more states have legalized same-sex marriage, it won’t provide any sort of evidence that same-sex marriage is detrimental, but it may rather show that same-sex marriage has a positive impact as more same-sex couples are able to legally wed in America.
Either way…I would say the religious right is pumping millions into a campaign they simply can’t win. Something that’s not good for any of us.
