3 of 11 Arrested in Bronx Attack Let Go
October 27, 2010
Of the 11 men arrested in a series of anti-gay beatings and torture that took place in the Bronx earlier this monty, three of them have been released due to “insufficient evidence”.
According to CNN.com:
Brian Cepeda, 17; Bryan Almonte, 17; and Steven Carabello, 17, were allowed to walk free after the district attorney’s investigation showed that the evidence “didn’t meet the burden of proof beyond a reasonable doubt” said Steven Reed, director of public information at the Bronx prosecutor’s office.
The attacks on all four victims are linked to a gang name the Latin King Goonies, who had suspected one of the victims, who was trying to join the gang may be gay.
However the DA office in the Bronx did announce yesterday that 26-year-old Luis Garcia, one of the men taken into custody, was indicted by a grand jury who brought charges of gang assault and robbery against him. Garcia faces up to 15 years for the gang assault charge and up to 25 years for robbery if found guilty.
The other seven who were arrested still have charges pending against them including abduction, assault, robbery, sodomy and unlawful imprisonment, which are all being considered as hate crimes.
