GLAAD's Jarrett Barrios Isn't Sure If Hollywood Hates Gays

I don’t know. At GLAAD, for instance, we issue a network responsibility analysis every year on the place of gays in the TV industry, and there has been enormous progress. Even though we’re seeing progress, we continue to see jokes and language and storylines that use these unsavory stereotypes that hurt gay people. In this case, hope springs eternal at GLAAD. There’s still time for Universal to do the right thing.

—GLAAD head Jarrett Barrios, saying he's unsure if Hollywood remains homophobic, even in light of the The Dilemma fracas, which, uh, could've been much worse.

Writer Oli Lyttelton says:

Whatever the film's supporters might say, there is something faintly offensive about the scene — in Allan Loeb's screenplay, dated a year ago, Vaughn's character goes on to say "Not homosexual gay… but soft gay, unmanly gay, quiet and small gay" (in the trailer, the line was "my-parents-are-chaperoning-the-dance gay") and that "if you're a real man… you don't want an electronic car," which tries to swerve [around the] homophobia while still taking the word as a slur, and at no point is he reprimanded for his stance by any other character.

The movie, which comes out in January from director Ron Howard, still has the revised joke in it at this point, despite GLAAD's calls for Universal to pull it.

Meanwhile, what about Chrysler, the self-professed gay-friendly automaker that "provided" the vehicles in (and perhaps some additional financial incentives to) The Dilemma? It's keeping mostly mum, saying it had no role in the script or the decision to take the joke out of the trailer.
