These Olympics are Being Named The Most Queerest Ever
Each Olympic Games features more openly queer and trans athletes than ever before and the 2024 Paris Games are no exception. |
LGBTQ+ sports outlet Outsports has the number at 155 (and counting), proving that the world is becoming more accepting of queer people — and by extension, queer athletes. According to Outsports’ reporting, less than 2% of the athletes at the Paris Games are out members of the LGBTQ+ community, and out women athletes far outnumber out male athletes. About 5% of Team USA’s athletes are openly LGBTQ+.
As acceptance grows, there are still some members of the LGBTQ+ community who aren’t represented at the Games. After a groundbreaking showing of out trans athletes at the 2020 Tokyo Games, including the first trans woman to qualify for the Olympics, Laurel Hubbard, representation has taken a step back this year. With the governing bodies of several sports issuing bans on transgender women, several athletes who had hoped to compete in Paris weren’t even given the opportunity to try to qualify, including American BMX rider Chelsea Wolfe (who was an alternate in Tokyo), British cyclist Em Bridges, and French sprinter Halba Diouf.
