The father of a gay 15-year-old in Patras, Greece severely beat him when he revealed his sexual orientation to him. The victim has been hospitalized.

According to the Greek newspaper Peloponnisos, the event took place in a small village on the Peloponnese just this past Friday. The teenager wanted to tell his father and uncle that he is gay. Both men were enraged of his coming out and beat him violently. In parts of rural Greece, homosexuality is still taboo.

The 15-year-old was bleeding when he went out to the village square. From there, he was later transferred to the Karamandaneion Hospital in Patras in bad condition. He is still in treatment and recovering. According to the Peloponnisos report on pelop.gr, the victim called the police himself.

Local residents who witnessed the scene called The Smile of the Child, a charity organization for children, and reported the incident in detail.

According to the report, the response of The Smile of the Child was immediate: “We will make a report, immediately in fact, to the Prosecutor’s Office of Patras so that the incident can be dealt with.”

The teenager’s mother, who is divorced from his father, rushed to the hospital to be with her son.

Greece, the LGBTQ+ community, and violence Ironically, the Patras incident took place during the week of EuroPride (June 21-29). Thessaloniki is hosting a pride parade on Saturday to celebrate the recent legalization of same-sex marriage.

Despite opposition in legalizing same-sex marriage, Greece has become the only country in southeastern Europe to do so, joining 15 other EU member states and a further 35 nations worldwide.

On June 15th, the LGBTQI+ community in Athens celebrated diversity and inclusion with an all-day event in the heart of the city at Syntagma Square.

Thousands of participants marched through the city center as they called for acceptance, inclusion, visibility, and equality under the slogan “a law is not enough.”

Athens, Thessaloniki, major cities, and popular islands such as Santorini, Mykonos, Paros, Rhodes, and Corfu, among others, are open to LGBTQ+ individuals. Overall, in places with tourist activity—which would be most parts of Greece—there are no particular issues with homosexuality.

However, in certain rural areas of Greece, gay individuals continue to face discrimination. This applies to same-sex couples and those of the LGBTQ+ community in general.

In late April, the British Foreign Office issued an updated travel advisory for queer people traveling to the Christian Orthodox majority country. The update on the foreign travel advice page warns that same-sex couples could experience discrimination in certain parts of Greece.

However, according to the law, assaulting someone because of their sexual orientation and for being gay is now considered a crime in Greece.
