Some Royals wear medals because they have earned them. Yanks may not be aware, but the vast majority of the British Royal family has served in the armed forces. See this…

That is His Majesty King Charles lll (Back when he was HRH the Prince of Wales) *EDIT - As another Quoran has accurately pointed out, His Majesty is wearing Army pilot's wings on the uniform of a Colonel of the Welsh Guards. He was their Colonel in chief. King Charles did his actual military service in the RAF and Royal Navy.* He served 5 years in total.

See this…

That is the King’s late father, His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. He served 13 years in the Royal Navy, including through the entirety of WW2 where he took part in the battle of the Mediterranean.

*EDIT 3 - A bit extra on His Royal Highness Prince Philip (because he was an absolute badass). During WW2, whilst serving as a midshipman aboard the Queen Elizabeth class battleship HMS Valiant during the Mediterranean Campaign, HRH was in charge of the ships searchlights. During a night action commonly known as The Battle of Cape Matapan, Philip was illuminating an Italian heavy cruiser that the Valiant was engaging at close range when he spotted a second Italian heavy cruiser sneaking in up close. As he illuminated it, the ship opened fire (specifically aiming for the searchlights). With bullets wizzing by, shells exploding all around and casualties racking up, Philip stayed resolutely at his post making sure the Italian cruisers remained illuminated for the ships gunners. His actions ensured the Valiant a swift victory and both cruisers were sunk within minutes. Philip was mentioned in dispatches for his bravery under fire and he was awarded the Greek War Cross.

That dodgy geezer is Prince Andrew, the kings slightly wayward brother. He served 20 years in the Royal Navy, including during the Falklands war.

See these cheeky chaps…

That’s the kings sons. Left is the heir to the throne, His Royal Highness William, Prince of Wales. On the right is Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex.

William served in the Royal Navy, RAF, Search & Rescue. He served 8 years in total. He then did 3 years with the Air Ambulance and donated all of his wages back to the charity.

Harry spent 10 years in the British army, including 2 tours in Afghanistan.

*EDIT 4 - I would just like to mention that William was copilot of a Lynx in an action against drug smugglers that led to the drive ire of £40m worth of drugs

*EDIT 2 - Due to time constraints and because I was including Royals in the 3 main service branches, I did not include Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth ll in this answer. I should have.

During WW2, in 1944, On her 18th birthday, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth ll (Princess Elizabeth as she was then) became the first female royal to enter full-time military service. She joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service which was at the time, the women’s branch of the British Army, where she qualified as an auto mechanic.

So if you see members of the British royal family wearing medals, don’t question it. If they are on their chest, it’s because they earned them.
