This just in: local billionaire officially comes out as transphobic! Quick, everybody pretends to be surprised!
Early Friday morning, over on the rotting corpse of Twitter, owner Elon Musk finally ripped off the last vestiges of his “just asking questions about trans people” mask, following several accounts known for expressing anti-trans sentiments and publicly voicing his support for transphobic extremism himself.
According to the automated account Big Tech Alert (which monitors the Twitter activity of tech CEOs and executives) and confirmed by Them, Musk smashed that follow button for several users on Friday, including the notorious Libs of TikTok, the platform founded by far-right activist Chaiya Raichik that helped push right-wing “groomer” propaganda into the mainstream. Musk also followed podcast propagandist Tim Pool (who hosted Ye on his show in November to expound on his antisemitism), conservative gay pundit Dave Rubin, and “intellectual dark web” biologist Bret Weinstein, all of whom have taken various anti-transgender positions in the past.
Concurrently with his new followers, Musk himself made several incendiary statements about trans people and those who provide gender-affirming care. First, in a reply to rapper Zuby — who himself has unleashed numerous anti-trans screeds and staged stunts spreading false information about trans athletes — Musk opined that “One should always be wary of the popular thing,” responding to the rapper’s claim that young people in the U.S. “pretend to have conditions they don’t” to fit in with their peers. The comments were apparently referencing the “social contagion” theory of trans identity, which has no basis in reality but is repeatedly pushed by conservatives like Musk and Joe Rogan.
Musk then replied to a poll by YouTuber and Tesla fanboy Steven Mark Ryan, writing “What’s a woman?”, a phrase that has been adopted as a transmisogynistic “gotcha” by trans-exclusionary feminists and Daily Wire extremist Matt Walsh. Then, in his most chilling message of the day (so far!), Musk told Josie Glabach — a contributor to Pool’s podcast — that “[a]ny parent or doctor who sterilizes a child before they are a consenting adult should go to prison for life.”
That’s a pretty scary sentiment to hear from one of the richest and most influential people on the planet! By “sterilize,” Musk is obliquely referring to gender-affirming therapy including puberty blockers, but it is a lie to say blockers cause sterility. Laws proposed by Republicans across the U.S. this year have spread that lie in attempts to criminalize gender-affirming medical care — while also carving out exceptions for nonconsensual, unnecessary surgeries on intersex youth, which actually do cause sterility.

After Two Weeks, Elon Musk’s Twitter Is Already in a Right-Wing Death Spiral
Experts say queer and trans people are likely to bear the brunt of the harm.
In essence, Musk is openly helping to spread anti-trans propaganda on one of the world’s largest social networks, which he just bought. But depressingly, that’s not actually news in itself. Musk has been known to post homophobic and transphobic statements seemingly at random for years; in 2020, Musk Tweeted “pronouns suck,” earning a public rebuke from his spouse Grimes, from whom he is now separated. In the lead-up to and aftermath of Musk’s purchase of Twitter last year, the billionaire said that Twitter’s ban of Jordan Peterson for deadnaming and harassing Elliot Page was “going way too far”; shared a homophobic conspiracy theory about Paul Pelosi; accused the company’s former head of trust and safety, a gay man, of sexualizing children; and reportedly walked back some Twitter policies against transphobia and related hate speech. And hey, who can forget that time he called a literal emergency rescuer a pedophile for no reason?
It’s worth mentioning that Musk’s own child is transgender, and has reportedly cut ties with her father entirely after changing her name. People are capable of being transphobic with no outside help, of course, but it’s hard to look at Musk’s ignorant cruelty and not suspect he might be a father who’s furious his kid won’t just fall in line and be “normal” like he wants.
Maybe Musk sees himself as another great protector of vulnerable children he’ll never actually listen to. Or maybe he’s just another billionaire with no empathy for others lashing out over any slight to his ego and intellect. Whatever’s going on in his head, we don’t actually care to find out. Just keep this charlatan away from lawmakers and actual trans kids, please.
