There have been plenty of people who have maintained that there’s no way Roger Federer can be considered the greatest player of all time – despite a record grand slam crowns – because of his losing record to archrivalRafael Nadal.
But earlier today at the ATP Tour Finals in London, Federer put another win in his column (he is now 9-17 against Nadal) with a stunning 6-3, 6-0 victory in the round robin portion of the competition.
While Nadal is himself one of the all-time greats with 10 slam wins, he has been able to notch so many more wins over Federer because so many of their match-ups have been on his preferred surface of clay – including five wins at the French Open.
But Nadal has never beaten Federer on an indoor surface with Federer winning all four of their matches indoors.
“Clay goes his way,” Federer said after the matchh. “At least I have one surface that goes my way.”
The 30-year-old Federer extended his winning streak to 14 matches following titles in Basel and Paris in the run-up to the ATP Finals. He is now guaranteed a spot in the semifinals of the tournament where he is the defending champion.
