In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Rachel Maddow said some surprising things regarding marriage equality. Quotes and details after the jump.
Rachel said that she and her partner didn't "feel any urgency" in getting married. But why, especially in crucial times when the community is hoping to gain equality, and respected, public LGBT individuals can only help influence the cause:
"I feel that gay people not being able to get married for generations, forever, meant that we came up with alternative ways of recognizing relationships," she told THR. "And I worry that if everybody has access to the same institutions that we lose the creativity of subcultures having to make it on their own. And I like gay culture." We like gay culture too!
Of course Maddow is a strong supporter of same-sex marriage, but do you think these statements will upset some who are trying hard to get legal recognition and the rights and privileges allotted with civil marriage?
It seems like our community has had to be creative to survive and live happy lives. Can we still have a gay subculture without our community suffering as second class citizens? Do we even want a gay subculture? What's your Instinct about the assimilation that Maddow speaks of?
