New iphone...Tell me What’s new about it again?
The iPhone 5 was not announced today at the Apple press conference. In its place was the iPhone 4S, similar to the iPhone 4 already on the market except with a creepy function called Siri that lets you talk with it like it’s Hal from “2001: A Space Odyssey.”
If you’re like me and your iPhone dates back to when Obama had favorable approval ratings, it doesn’t matter—you’re going to get one anyway. You don’t really have a choice. Somehow the cycle of phone death matched up perfectly with this newest product launch—last week fully 41% of mobile phone users planning to get a new phone in the near future said they planned to get the new iPhone.
Having to settle for an iPhone 4S instead of the redesigned iPhone 5 may seem like a bit of a let down: surely next May Apple will release the iPhone 5, and you’ll be six months into your contract, hopelessly out of reach of the newest, coolest phone.
But before you get to feeling you’re on the losing end of this deal, there’s one department where you could win big: Sprint.
Whenever you get a new phone you usually end up signing a new contract in exchange for the phone company reducing the price of your phone. Whenever you’re signing a new contract, it’s a good idea to look around at what the competition is offering so you can get the best deal.
Sprint did something in order to convince Apple to let it carry the iPhone which the stock market thinks is very dumb but could be a big win for you as a consumer: They promised to buy 30.5 million iPhones from Apple over the next four years.
Sprint only has 32 million monthly subscribers right now (the rest are pre-paid subscribers). AsNewser points out this means Sprint needs to either double the number of its subscribers or convince all of its existing users to switch to iPhones, or some combination thereof. Whether you’re a current Sprint subscriber or a potential subscriber, this is good news for you—it means the company needs to scramble for your business.
Six months ago I never would have imagined myself saying this—but I think I’m switching to Sprint.
