Haters Attack Ros-Lehtinen And Son For Marriage Support

When Vermont was debating same-sex marriage, it became known that State Senator Kevin Mullen has a son who is gay. He voted in favor of the measure and was rewarded for supporting true family values by being reelected to his position. You see, true family values is not measured by one’s devotion to an antiquated book, but rather how one is willing to help and support one’s child. So, it is not surprising to find out that US Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, a Florida Republican, has a transsexual son. Ros-Lehtinen has come out in favor of ending the Defense of Marriage Act.
A true parent wants their child to be happy and equal and knows that if their child is not equal, then they cannot be happy.
This is not something that the Christian anti-family groups understand. Anthony Verdugo, the executive director of the anti-family Christian Family Coalition in Miami-Dade County, blasted Ros-Lehtinen saying “We’re putting her and all other Republicans on notice that if they’re going to represent themselves as Republicans, they’ve got to respect the party platform.”
This came in response to Ros-Lehtinen telling the Miami Herald that “I have had the opportunity to speak with so many members of our community on both sides of the issue of marriage equality and, after much soul-searching, have concluded that it is time for our laws to better reflect the principles of equality that serve the better angels of our nature. I’m a pro-life, gay-rights advocate, so I manage to upset many folks at any given time!”
Back in 1996, Ros-Lehtinen voted for the Defense of Marriage Act. She is not alone in having voted for DOMA and now wishing to see that injustice repealed.
Ros-Lehtinen’s child Amanda came out as a trans man now named *Rodrigo. Of course, the National Organization for Marriage could not stop themselves from spewing hatred towards Ros-Lehtenin’s son saying “Transgender daughter of #marriage flip-flopper Rep. Ros-Lehtenin played part in decision to abandon #DOMA?” Of course, it is not surprising that a bigot like Brian Brown, who tweeted that, would avoid calling Rodrigo by his real gender. After all, family values and human values are unknown to those who toss their lesbian, gay, and trans children out onto the streets.
For his part, Rodrigo Lehtinen is a member of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force.
