IMMOKALEE(FL) — Three teenagers have been arrested following an attack on two gay men in Immokalee.
Jonathan Rodriguez, 18, of the 3500 block of Carson Lake Circle, Immokalee, was arrested Tuesday by Collier County Sheriff deputies at his home. He was charged with misdemeanor battery.
Two juveniles were also arrested, according to Natalie Felber, spokeswoman with the Collier County Sheriff's Office. The two were charged with misdemeanors, Felber said, but could not elaborate on the charges because they are juvelines.
One of the victims, Cirildo Soliz, 21, started using the social networking site Facebook to identify the men who attacked him. He told deputies he recognized Rodriguez as one of the attackers from his Facebook photo. The other victim, Manuel Galan, 27, later affirmed Soliz's claim.
Rodriguez's bond has been set at $1,000.
The victims told deputies they had been jumped by five men on Sept. 21 while walking down Carson Road near Eden Avenue in Immokalee, according to police reports.
Soliz and Galan said the assailants were yelling homophobic slurs as they punched, kicked and hit them.
The Collier County Sheriff's Office has investigated it as possible a hate crime, but the Florida Department of Law Enforcement has yet to officially name it as such.
