LGTB Should Have Special Minister to Defend their Rights in Quebec

CALGARY -- Lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people — especially in Alberta — should have a special federal minister to defend their rights, says one Quebec NDP MP.
In an interview with a local radio station last week, NDP MP Dany Morin said he is calling for a special minister to represent those in the LGBT community.
He said LBGT people need someone to defend them in Ottawa.
"It's sorta like women who need a minister or spokespeople in women's issues," he said. "The LGBT people are minorities in Canada and their rights are not at the same level of others.
"When you're scared for your safety because you've been advised or beaten because you're different, it's not OK."
And he said the need is especially great for places like Alberta.
He said "far more" cases of discrimination have occurred in Alberta than Quebec.
"My role is more Canadian. ... I have to listen more to people who contact me by phone or Internet from elsewhere in Canada,” he said. “The LGBT community is evolving — people elsewhere in Canada don't have the openness of Quebec."                                     By Katie Schneider, QMI Agency http://cnews.canoe.ca/
