Gainesville's new Gay Mayor. Dove Ministries is bankrolling a Recount

Craig Lowe, Gainesville’s gay out frontrunner for mayor was the target of some nasty homophobic campaign tactics by both Dove Ministries and his opponent Don Marsh. Despite that, Lowe won the mayoral election runoff last night, but his margin of victory was just 35 votes, triggering automatic recount.

Lowe said he’s confident his victory would hold up, but noted the homophobia that had been used in the campaign:

There was definitely homophobia and prejudice that was injected into the campaign . . . All I can say is Don Marsh ran the dirtiest electoral campaign in the history of Gainesville.

The recount begins Friday. If elected, Lowe would join the 30 or so gay or lesbian mayors nationwide.
