Maryland Teen Sentenced for the McD's Beating of Transgender

Chrissy Lee PolisA Maryland teenager caught on video brutally beating a transgender woman at a McDonald's was sentenced to five years in prison on Tuesday, the Baltimore Sun reported.
Teonna Monae Brown, 19, pleaded guilty last month to first-degree assault and a hate crime for kicking and dragging Chrissy Lee Polis, 22, as she tried to enter a women's bathroom at the fast-food restaurant in Rosedale, Md.
Brown was sentenced to 10 years in total, but five years were suspended, the Baltimore Sun reported. She faced up to 35 years in prison.
She apologized in court for the attack.
"My mother didn't raise me like this," Brown said, according to the Sun. "I would really like to apologize to the victim."
Horrifying video of the April attack shows Polis going into what looks like a seizure as Brown and another teen continue to kick her.
"They said, 'That's a dude, that's a dude, and she's in the female bathroom,'" Polis told the Sun in April. "They spit in my face."
In the video, bystanders can be heard laughing. They do not stop until an older woman intervened.
Another teenager was charged as a juvenile.
In a statement submitted to the court, Polis said that her life had been ruined by the attack.
"My private life has been exposed to the world. I lost my job. I cannot go anywhere without the fear of getting hurt again," she said. "I want to go into a hole and hide."
