Gay Partner Of Black Man Killed In Hate Crime Not Allowed to Lawsuit

By Kirsten West Savali

The man who was killed in a violent hate crime in Jackson, Mississippi last month by an alleged group of white teens, is not the only person involved in the case facing discrimination.
James C. Anderson, the man killed in the hate crime in which a group of white teens allegedly yelled “Kill that Ni**er,” was also a gay man. His partner of 17 years, James Bradfield, is unable to be named as a plaintiff in the lawsuit being brought by the family against the seven teenagers named as defendants because “under Mississippi law, same-sex partners have no claim in civil actions like this,” said Mr. Morris Dees of the Southern Poverty Law Center.
