Cuomo Not Committed to Push For Same-Sex Marriage

Gov. Cuomo today dismissed the criticism:
sweden gay marriage.jpg“It is a critical issue,” Cuomo said in Lake Placid, his latest stop in his tour to push his legislative agenda.
“It’s an issue where the people of this state have evolved on this issue. The majority of the people of the state now support marriage equality. That was not true just a few years ago.
“We’re making progress. I’m doing everything I can. We’ll see. We’ll keep our fingers crossed. I’m cautiously optimistic.”
Queer Rising issued a joint statement with the Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club in New York City yesterday blasting Cuomo for saying he didn’t want to bring the gay marriage issue up for a Senate vote unless its passage is assured.
"Cuomo's support for marriage equality is appearing more to be a political stunt than an act of commitment to do the right thing," Queer Rising's Natasha Dillon said. "The governor has not done the lobbying necessary to change votes. He had misled New Yorkers into believing that passage of marriage equality was going to happen this year and now is backtracking."
A coalition of major gay groups jumped to the governor’s defense.
Meanwhile, Cuomo, during a media scrum, also tamped down his rhetoric against the Legislature.
“We’re making progress in Albany that we haven’t made in years,” he said citing the on-time budget. “We’re working well. We’re working cooperatively and I want to keep that spirt going.”
