The Look of defeat?               OR          Excitement

Excitement & Defeat:

welcome to an afternoon of misery, pain, tension, fear, more misery, anger, frustration, tears, brief joy, and more misery this time intensified by the brief joy that went before. For fans of Wigan, Blackburn, Birmingham, Blackpool, Wolves this will be the longest afternoon of the season. All five desperately want to survive, but, like the Highlander (well, Highlander 3 maybe), there can only be, well, three.
An interesting stat for you: in the Premier League era (yuck – I apologise) 20 teams have gone into the final day in the relegation zone but with a chance of survival. Only six have clawed their way out, and only one of those (West Brom in 2004-05) have been in anything other that the top spot in the bottom three. Bad news, then, for Blackpool and Wigan.
But before we kick-off, let's get one thing straight. The Championship is not Oblivion and it is not The Abyss. It's a tremendous league in which to play football, on many levels more interesting and exciting than the Premier League. Sure, relegation isn't much fun (as I know only too well), but life outside the top tier can be.
