Anti Gay Assemblyman Admits If Gays Were to Marry: Nothing Will Happen!
by Bridgette P. LaVictoire
If you listen to those who are against same-sex marriage, they make grandiose claims about protecting children, about saving families, and about protecting society. They vilify lesbians and gays as unfit parents, and same sex couples as destroying the family. They claim that lesbians and gays lead an unhealthy lifestyle, and that what they are doing is just unnatural. There is almost no real mention of the Bible in their rhetoric. Nor are there ever any actual mention of the consequences of allowing same-sex couples to have full marriage rights.

Why is that?
Well, because they know that relying upon the Bible would make this a purely religious matter and that would lose in court faster than one can blink. The second, of course, would lose them any real argument on the subject.
The problem, of course, this is about imposting their religious beliefs on others and allowing lesbians and gays to marry will have no negative consequences on society.
ThinkProgress’ Igor Volsky spoke to New York Assemblyman Marcos Crespo on Sunday at State Senator Ruben Diaz Sr’s anti-gay rally. The theme was that the Church has nothing against gay people, but that it did not want gays to get married. The conversation was rather startling. Here is the transcript:
VOLSKY: What do you think would happen if gays were allowed to marry?CRESPO: Nothing would happen. The sky ain’t gonna fall and the world ain’t gonna end. I respect my brothers and sisters on the other side this is not a message of hate. I find it insulting when people believe that because of our position on traditional marriage that it’s somehow a homophobic statement — it’s not the case.VOLSKY: But then if there is no negative consequences, why are you guys here though?CRESPO: Because we support traditional marriage based not only on our biblical beliefs but we what we believe is in the best interest of our community. That’s it.
Volsky noted:
It’s unclear how civil marriage would interfere with Crespo’s religious definition, since his church would not be forced to perform same-sex ceremonies. Good As You’s Jeremy Hooper raised a similar question with another of the rally’s organizers without getting a definitive answer.
Back in the 1960’s, many of the same arguments were made against interracial marriage in the United States. The reality is that it was not about anything other than prejudice, hatred, and bigotry. Today is no different. Their push against lesbians and gays having equality is about hatred, prejudice and bigotry.
