Gay parents win rights in New York
New York State’s highest court affirmed two cases on parental rights for non-biological patents on Tuesday.
In the first case, the court voted 4-3 to allow a woman to seek child support from her former partner, even if the ex is not the biologically related.
In the other case, which experts cited as the more important of the two, the court ruled the non-biological parent can seek visitation rights on a child that she helped raise.
“In many ways this is a real breakthrough in New York,” Susan Sommer, senior counsel and director of constitutional litigation for Lambda Legal told the New York Times.
