Girl Friend Proposes to Girl at Central Park with 17 Umbrellas

With the sun shining it wasn't exactly a day for umbrellas but for one New York woman it took no less than 17 of them in rainbow colours and two months of planning to ask for her girlfriend's hand in marriage.
Visitors to Central Park looked on in delight as friends and family of the couple opened up their umbrellas spelling the words 'Will You Marry Me?' while the two women rowed in the park's Lake.
Romance: A woman was taken by surprise by her girlfriend (pictured in boat) when a colourful display of umbrellas spelled out a marriage proposal as the rowed on Central Park's Lake on Thursday
'I have always been a big believer in grand gestures of love and wanted my proposal to be just that - a grand expression of my feelings,' the proposer told MailOnline while wishing to remain anonymous.
I decided on the umbrella idea because I thought it would be the most visually beautiful and I thought by having us out on the rowboat it would be a little more private,' she explained. The sweet gesture took place on the Bow Bridge, a cast iron structure, that spans 60 feet across the Lake joining the floral landscape of Cherry Hill to the woodland of the Ramble.
Taken entirely by surprise, her unsuspecting partner of five years clasped her hands to her mouth in shock before kissing her girlfriend and accepting the romantic proposal.
The couple were already celebrating their fifth anniversary with a romantic boating trip in the city where they have lived for six years and where they met.
Colourful: The umbrellas were an array of rainbow colours and luckily weren't needed for anything rain-related as the sun shone all day
