Trump Speaks: President Trump used a speech at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland on Wednesday to criticize Europe and cast the world as almost entirely reliant on the United States for peace and prosperity. “Without us, most of the countries don’t even work,” Mr. Trump said in lengthy remarks that contained complaints that the United States had been mistreated by its allies, and could not rely on them for mutual defense. Greenland: Mr. Trump said the U.S. “won’t use force” to take control of Greenland, repeating that it was necessary for national and international security. He said he would be “appreciative” if the world acquiesced to his desire to take over the territory. “Or,” he added, “you can say no and we will remember.”
As he turns to the fraud scandal that law enforcement officials say took root in Minnesota’s Somali diaspora, Trump says, “Can you believe that? Somalia. They turned out to be higher I.Q. than we thought.” Some near the front of the audience groaned loudly at that line. Trump has long been fixated on the Somali community and has increasingly delivered insulting tirades. Many Somali Americans in Minnesota say the fraud has damaged the reputation of their entire community of about 80,000 people.
Trump said that Gov. Gavin Newsom of California was a “good guy” whom he used to get along with. Earlier in the day, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent called Newsom “smug” and said that he “strikes me as Patrick Bateman meets Sparkle Beach Ken” as he promised to investigate fraud in California.

Trump’s speech so far says a lot about his approach to the global stage and more broadly the presidency. As he said in an interview with The New York Times, he feels the only thing stopping him on the world stage is himself. He has shown how emboldened he is here by lashing out at NATO in front of members of the alliance and essentially demanding a sovereign territory be given to the United States. He is affirming the fears expressed by many world leaders in the lead-up to this speech — that the United States is willing to forgo allies and partnerships for territorial expansion and power grabs.
Trump took it a step further by criticizing the host of the summit, Switzerland. “They’re only good because of us,” prompting some attendees to gasp.
| President Trump has been texting world leaders, and in one message, he told Norway’s prime minister that he is trying to seize Greenland partly because he didn’t receive a Nobel Peace Prize. Overnight, Trump shared messages he received from world leaders, including one from France’s President Emmanuel Macron, who tried flattery and then proposed discussing Greenland over dinner. Now, world leaders are meeting face-to-face at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where Trump is scheduled to speak on Wednesday. |
