Colorado Nightclub Shooting

Five people were killed and at least 25 others injured late Saturday when a gunman opened fire at Club Q, an LGBTQ nightclub in Colorado Springs, about 70 miles south of Denver. Reports say two patrons fought and subdued the shooter, 22-year-old Anderson Aldrich, minutes before police arrived and placed him in custody.

Early reports claim the shooter entered the busy nightclub with two firearms, including a long rifle, just before midnight and began shooting immediately. The venue hosted live music Saturday followed by dancing, with a brunch to mark an annual memorial for transgendered victims of violence planned for Sunday morning. No motive has yet been identified and investigators, including the FBI, are evaluating whether the attack will be prosecuted as a hate crime. The names of the victims have not yet been released.

World Cup 2022

The 2022 World Cup kicks off in earnest today in host country Qatar, with the US men's national soccer team taking on Wales (FOX, 2 pm ET) in their opening game in the first round of matches. It marks the first World Cup held in the Arab world, with the tournament shifted from its traditional June-July timeframe due to the intense summer heat in Qatar.

The playoff format for the cup involves an initial round-robin with eight groups of four teams each (see groupings)—teams are awarded three points for a win, one point for a draw, and no points for a loss. The top two teams from each group then advance to a 16-team, single-elimination bracket. Brazil enters as the Vegas favorite to hoist the cup, followed by Argentina, defending champion France, England, and Spain.

The US, which missed out on the 2018 World Cup after losing a qualifier to Trinidad and Tobago, enters with high hopes. Led by star Christian Pulisic, the squad won the CONCACAF Nations League and Gold Cup last year. Analysts say advancing out of their group, which includes England, Iran, and Wales, would constitute success.

The opening ceremony was held yesterday in Al Bayt Stadium in the city of Al Khor (see photos), followed by a match between Qatar and Ecuador, with the latter winning 2-0.

@realDonaldTrump Unbanned

Twitter CEO Elon Musk reinstated the account of former President Donald Trump over the weekend after putting the decision to a public poll on the platform Saturday. More than 15 million users cast votes, with 52% supporting the move (see tweet). Trump's account was banned in the aftermath of the Jan. 6 storming of the US Capitol under previous company leadership; Musk assumed control of Twitter late last month.

During his 2016 campaign and throughout his presidency, Trump leveraged the platform to facilitate an unprecedented connection with the general public. Peaking near 89 million followers, he averaged 33 tweets per day by the end of his term.

Trump, who launched his 2024 presidential campaign last week, signaled he would not return to Twitter. Instead, he'll continue to post on his own platform, Truth Social, where he has around 4.5 million followers. Reports also suggest Trump has a 90% ownership stake of the platform, with its success predicated on his continuing engagement.
