Ukraine’s president said Thursday that more than 2,000 children have been kidnapped since the start of Russia’s war against his country.
"We do not know the whereabouts of our children," said Volodymyr Zelenskyy, speaking at the European Council summit, which he attended virtually.
Zelenskyy also accused Russian forces of firing on humanitarian aid convoys and targeting women and children in evacuation corridors.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk said more than 3,300 people were evacuated from the regions of Kyiv, Donetsk, and Zaporizhzhia on Thursday.
However, she said the Ukrainian side was not able to evacuate people living in the besieged city of Mariupol and dozens of busses loaded with humanitarian aid could not enter it.
Russia's war on Ukraine, which began on Feb. 24, has been met with international outrage, with the European Union, US, and the UK among others implementing tough financial sanctions on Moscow.
At least 1,035 civilians have been killed in Ukraine and 1,650 injured, according to estimates by the UN, which cautioned that the true figure is likely far higher.
More than 3.67 million Ukrainians have also fled to neighboring countries, with millions more displaced inside the country, according to the UN refugee agency.

The US alleges that the Russian militFGN kidnapped 2,000 children from Ukraine. Russia has yet to comment on the allegation. The US embassy in Kyiv, citing Ukraine’s foreign ministry, said 2,389 Ukrainian children were illegally picked up and taken to Russia from Russian-controlled areas of Luhansk and the oblast. It does not help, it’s kidnapping.Ukraine made a new appeal on Tuesday to Russia to allow humanitarian aid to transport food and drink to the southern city of Mariupol, news agency Reuters reported. Deputy Prime Minister Irina Vereshchuk said on Ukrainian TV, “We demand the opening of the humanitarian corridor to civilians.” He also said that the Russian army was also blocking humanitarian supplies from reaching the people of the southern city of Kherson.
Fighting for Ukraine’s strategic port of Mariupol erupted on Monday. Because Ukraine rejected the Russian offer to withdraw its troops from the surrounded city. Russian bombing continues in other cities in Ukraine. Ukraine’s President Zelensky told the Italian parliament on Tuesday that his country was on the verge of escaping its war with Russian forces. He warned that Russia wanted to enter the rest of Europe. For Russian soldiers, Ukraine is the gateway to Europe, where they want to enter.
Zelensky said in a video message that Mariupol had been devastated by the Russian bombing. City officials say that he does not have food, medicine, electricity, water. There is nothing left there.
