•  It would be great if we could live forever. But unless you’re swept up in a rapture, you’ll likely die. Some of us sooner than others.
• A new mortality index released by the University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine allows people over 50 take a quiz and find out their odds of meeting their maker by 2023.

• The index could scare you straight into eating better and getting more exercise, but it’s not designed to put the fear of God in you. Marisa Cruz and her team based the quiz questions and answers on health data from 20,000 adults over 50 that researchers had studied between 1998 and 2008. They designed it to help doctors decide whether to recommend expensive, long-view tests and procedures for patients who may already have one foot in the grave.
• You don’t need to see a doctor if you want find out your probability of death. If you’re that curious, UCSF has made the whole checklist available online. A lower score means a lower likelihood of dying. Higher score means a higher chance of dying. The highest possible score is 26, which corresponds to a 95 percent chance of dying within the next 10 years.
