Texas AG Ken Paxton Disses Trump on Hot Mic After President Insinuates He’s Ugly
An audio recording obtained by the New York Times seemingly uncovered Ken Paxton’s thoughts on Trump’s Dallas midterm convention and, namely, how the Texas AG thought the convention may have hurt his bid for a U.S. Senate seat.

There’s some major Mean Girls energy coming from recent interactions between Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who just can’t stop trying to strip transgender people of their access to healthcare, and President Donald Trump.
In an audio recording obtained by The New York Times and released September 30, Paxton is asked on a hot mic by an attendee of a private fundraiser in Washington D.C. held six days prior, “Do you feel like he’s a little bit of a drag?” The “he” in the audio was not specified, but other sources corroborate that the statement in question was in reference to President Trump. The audio seemingly uncovered Paxton’s thoughts on Trump’s Dallas midterm convention and, namely, how the Texas AG thought the convention may have hurt his bid for a U.S. Senate seat in the midterm elections this November in a close race against Democratic contender James Talarico.

Paxton’s response to the question? “So, to be honest with you, the numbers couldn’t get — when we did that convention, it dropped our numbers; everybody’s numbers dropped.”
“Um, right now?” the anonymous source asked.

“Yeah. It’s not good. I wish there was something we could do to turn that around, but there’s obviously nothing,” Paxton said in the recording. His remarks, the Times reported, appear to refer to the harm Trump’s Dallas convention did to his campaign and the bleak prospects of turning his image around.
The event at which this audio was captured took place on September 24 near the Capitol, was hosted by Republican lobbyists Susan Hirschmann and Chris Brinson, and was attended by about a dozen donors and lobbyists. The source who gave the audio recording to the Times remains anonymous due to the private nature of Paxton’s remarks, but according to the paper of record, the source opposes Paxton’s campaign.

In addition, per the Times, “Three other people with knowledge of the event confirmed Mr. Paxton’s attendance. Two of these people recalled that Mr. Paxton had been posed this question, and one recalled his response about the negative consequences of Mr. Trump’s convention.”
Paxton’s team attempted to do some extensive damage control with a senior adviser from his campaign alleging that the New York Times story was “manipulated nonsense” and that their latest poll showed Paxton leading the race by three points, claiming that serious polls would say their numbers had increased, and that Paxton would win the election. According to non-partisan polling site RealClearPolitics, the nine most recent polls available dating from September 8 through September 26 show that Paxton’s Democratic opposition, James Talarico, is actually polling 2.9 points ahead on average.

But what’s even more scandalous is that this leaked audio was released after Trump made comments about Paxton’s physical appearance and style during the Dallas convention, which was put on by Trump in an attempt to raise money for Republican midterm campaigns.
“He may not be the best-looking guy I’ve ever seen,” he said of Paxton, “but you know what, he is—he’s the greatest attorney general in America.” Did the president call his Texan pick for the U.S. Senate…ugly?
