Trump Hurt Biden’s Favorable No.’s But He Hurt Himself More....Another Man Shot Dead Following Trump’s Propaganda

President Trump didn’t make himself more appealing to voters during the Republican convention, but he did hurt Joe Biden, White House editor Margaret Talev writes from a new Axios-SurveyMonkey poll.
  • Biden's favorable/unfavorable rating with independents who don't lean toward either party dropped from a net -5 to -18 in a week.
  • But Trump's also eroded — and remained far worse than Biden's — sliding from -35 to -37. The top three words Republicans used to describe their convention were "patriotic," "inspiring" and "uplifting":

Democrats' top words for the RNC were "lies," "Trump" and "fear":

What to watch: Jon Cohen, SurveyMonkey chief research officer: "[A] fierce contest between two unpopular candidates foreshadows 2016."

"One man was shot and killed in downtown Portland as dueling demonstrations — one a pro-Trump car caravan and another a counter-protest mounted by various opposing groups — unfolded late Saturday, " The (Portland) Oregonian reports.
  • "Various scuffles between pro-Trump demonstrators and counter-protesters had broken out in the hours since a vehicle rally in support of President Donald Trump, which began near Clackamas Town Center, reached Portland. Organizers ... encouraged demonstrators to come armed, but not carry their firearms openly."
  • "The fatal shooting occurred after most of the Trump caravan had left downtown."
The N.Y. Times' Mike Baker reports from the scene (subscription): "The man who was shot and killed was wearing a hat with the insignia of Patriot Prayer, a far-right group based in the Portland area that has clashed with protesters in the past."
  • "The shooting capped a volatile week in the United States that began when the police in Kenosha, Wis., repeatedly shot a Black man, Jacob Blake, prompting new protests against racism and police brutality that included the cancellation of professional sports games."
