Agents with the FBI’s field office in San Juan, Puerto Rico, have arrested a man on charges related to multiple threats of committing anti-LGBTQ+ mass violence and possession of child sexual abuse material.

According to a June 26 press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Puerto Rico, Robinson De La Cruz Hilario was taken into custody last week following an investigation that began earlier this year. In February, the FBI San Juan field office counterterrorism program received an anonymous tip about a social media user who appeared to be planning a mass shooting targeting the LGBTQ+ community. According to an affidavit, the user had shared a “tactical map” showing a gay-friendly bar in the metropolitan area of Puerto Rico. Agents were able to identify the user as De La Cruz.

A search of his social media turned up multiple public posts, dating back to at least 2024, in which De La Cruz expressed anti-LGBTQ+ hatred and indicated his intent to carry out a mass shooting. A November 2024 post included a photo of De La Cruz pointing what appears to be a firearm at the camera along with the phrase “POV last thing you will see on Pride month” in Spanish, according to the affidavit.

In several posts, De La Cruz expressed admiration for Omar Mateen, the man who carried out the June 2016 massacre at the Orlando gay nightclub Pulse. In one February 2026 post, De La Cruz described Mateen as “a hero.” In early June, he posted images of patches associated with neo-Nazis over which he had written “Let’s burn the LGBTQ community to the ground hunting season is on” and “Let’s kill every single person in the LGBTQ community in Puerto Rico let’s make Puerto Rico great again.”

After issuing a search and seizure warrant for De La Cruz’s Google accounts, FBI agents discovered “as many as 500 images that contain cartoon or artificial intelligence-created obscene visual representations of minor engaging in sexually explicit conduct” and seven videos of child sexual abuse.

FBI agents carried out a search of De La Cruz’s residence on June 24, during which he agreed to be interviewed. According to the affidavit, De La Cruz admitted to operating the social media accounts and to researching firearms and how to use them. He acknowledged that his posts could be interpreted as threats, but claimed that he never intended to carry out a mass shooting. Instead, he described his posts as “trolling” which he hoped would lead to the cancellation of Pride events.

De La Cruz is charged with interstate communication of threats, receiving child sexual abuse material, and receipt and possession of obscene visual representations of child sexual abuse.
