A crowd stopped police from arresting a gay couple at a Mexico beach last week, the Independent reported.

Local police said the arrests were based on “immoral acts and sexual erotic demonstrations,” in a statement, though no one at the beach witnessed the alleged sexual acts, LGBTQ Nation reported.

According to several videos of the incident, people present at the beach shouted “I’m gay too” as police arrested the couple, the Independent reported. Police then released the two men.

“The cops behaved VIOLENTLY, and gave arguments like ′there are families and children and they can't be watching this,’” Maritza Escalante Morales, who posted videos of the incident on Facebook, said in a post.

LGBT discrimination in Mexico has been illegal since 2003.
