One Pill Once a Day Approved by FDA for Treatment of HIV

Antiretroviral medicine is dislayed. A new once-a-day pill to treat HIV infection -- combining two previously approved drugs plus two new ones -- has been approved for adults living with the virus that causes AIDS, the US FDA said Monday. The single daily dose provides a complete treatment regimen for HIV infection, the US Food and Drug Administration said in a statement, and is part of a progression of increasingly simplified treatment options

Who would have thought only a decade ago that the cocktail of 3-5 drugs to fight HIV would be replaced by just one pill. Also that we have made advances that were promised 15 years ago that we would protect the HIV negative individual gay and straight that is sexually active.

"We stand at the cusp of achieving an AIDS-free generation. The adoption of the National HIV/AIDS Strategy, combined with advances in scientific research, has reinvigorated our fight against the spread of HIV. New tools and treatments, especially ones that will decrease transmission rates in highly affected groups, are critical.

Recently, the Food and Drug Administration approved the use of Truvada, a medication originally used in anti-retroviral therapy to treat people infected with HIV, for use as pre-exposure prophylaxis or PrEP. This is a positive development, and one that can save lives. Yet with any tool to combat HIV, no one tool will serve all people.”    Janet Weinberg, CEO Gay Men’s Health Crisis

That is why the news of just one pill a day is also good news for the HIV negative individuals because this is another tool to help people in not contracting or passing HIV.  With the failures of treatment in the past we have learn one thing and that is that one knock out punch is not the answer but instead many hits coming from different directions is what going to make this virus disappear. Had we spent the resources earlier we would have had answers earlier, but I am not the one to cry over spilled milk. The important thing is the present and the future and it seems that getting advancement news every couple of years, tells us that we can see the light at the end of the tunnel. We are in the right path.  If we could only convince people to become knowledgeable about why is important to get tested,  we would get out of the tunnel even faster.
