For the first time ever, the Democratic party are set to include a official, party-wide pro-gay marriage stance in their platform at their national convention in September. As sources inside the party told Politico, a committee approved a draft version of the DNC's official stance, which is expected to back up President Obama's announcement back in May supporting the legalization of gay marriage.
The language won't become the official party line until DNC's full platform committee approves it at their next meeting on August 10th, but there has been little to no backlash within the party so far. “I don’t think that we had any issues that were controversial,” one member of the committee told Politico today. “I think we were pretty much in sync and in agreement with where we ended up.”
Congressman Barney Frank (D-Massachusetts), who sits on the 15-person platform drafting committee and had an awesome gay wedding of his own, also told the Washington Blade that the decision to include support of legalizing same-sex marriage was unanimous. According to an anonymous staffer inside the DNC, the party will not only be supporting marriage equality, but will support the Employment Non-Discrimination Act. Amongst all that positivity, the new language reportedly also reject the Defense of Marriage Act which Republican Speaker John Boehner has been working to protect at taxpayers' expense.
Although the official party language has yet to be be approved, a draft made the rounds back in February, before the President came out supporting the legalization of gay marriage. That draft read:
We support the full inclusion of all families in the life of our nation, with equal respect, responsibilities, and protections under the law, including the freedom to marry. Government has no business putting barriers in the path of people seeking to care for their family members, particularly in challenging economic times. We support the Respect for Marriage Act and the overturning of the federal so-called Defense of Marriage Act, and oppose discriminatory constitutional amendments and other attempts to deny the freedom to marry to loving and committed same-sex couples.
