Carson Daly Gets Smock Down From Mother of Gay Hero Son

The mother of one of the heroes who prevented terrorists from crashing Flight 93 into the White House is taking Carson Daly to task after the host of "The Voice" joked on his radio show that gays would not have been able to stop an unhinged JetBlue pilot.
Daly could've used some help restraining himself on his show Wednesday as he joked about pilot Clayton Osbon’s mid-air meltdown the day before, marveling how lucky it was that many of the passengers onboard were strong men heading to a security conference.
“With my luck, it would be like this is the flight going to Pride in San Francisco," said Daly. "I mean, that would be my colleagues,” he said. “Uh, we’re headed down to Vegas for the floral convention.”
"Can we get a little help? 'Ohhh no,'" Daly quipped in an effeminate voice.
Alice Hoagland, whose son Mark Bingham was one of the heroes on Flight 93, didn't find the bit amusing.
"Yes, my gay son was known in our family for bringing me flowers on my birthday and Mother’s Day," Hoagland told TMZ.com. "He also was known for careening down the rugby pitch, and, on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001, for charging unarmed down the aisle of a doomed Boeing 757 to face knife-wielding Islamist thugs in a hijacked cockpit."
"No one among his pick-up team of fellow passengers was asking, 'Are you straight? Are you gay?,'" she said in the letter to the gossip site, adding that no one onboard doubted her 6-foot-4 son's ability to be an asset charging the hijacked cockpit.
"The world has its share of strong, heroic gay men," said Hoagland. "Gay men in sports uniforms and military uniforms have been winning America’s games and fighting America’s battles for a long time: quietly, humbly, and in the face of vicious bigotry."
In the face of angry backlash to the segment, Daly apologized a few hours after his show.
“I’ve long been a supporter of gay and lesbian rights, and I’m saddened that my comments, however unintentional, offended anyone, specifically members of the LGBT community,” Daly said in a statement.
