Christian groups in the US are calling on religious followers to boycott Starbucks after the coffee chain backed gay marriage in Washington.
The USA Christian Ministries has urged coffee lovers to grab their morning brew elsewhere in protest at the global brand's support for same-sex marriage legislation.
Steven Andrew, USA Christian Ministriespresident, hopes that, with the support of Christians nationwide, Starbucks could lose 80% of its business.
He said: 'Christians are upset with Starbucks for turning against God.
'Starbucks is no longer fashionable. If your church still uses Starbucks, then your pastor is a friend of the world.'
He added: 'Starbucks can follow Satan if they want to.'
In an email sent to US business partners, obtained by The Seattle Times, Starbucks executive vice president of partner resources, Kalen Holmes, said: 'Starbucks is proud to join other leading Northwest employers in support of Washington State legislation recognizing marriage equality for same-sex couples.'
She continued: 'This important legislation is aligned with Starbucks business practices and upholds our belief in the equal treatment of partners.'
The company joined the fight for marriage equality, along with other US corporations, including Microsoft and Nike, as Washington edged closer to legal partnerships for gay couples last week.
Yesterday, gay rights campaigners were celebrating after the capital's state approved a marriage equality bill after an evening debate and a bipartisan vote.
Washington is the seventh state in the country to pass the legislation allowing same-sex couples to marry.
