Gov. Christie Understands The Trends Are Moving Against Him on Gay Marriage

 Dean Pagani
Only On GoJo - Facing the prospect of a difficult re-election campaign, and a growing trend in states in his region toward the legalization of gay marriage, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie(R) appeared last week to give proponents an easy way past his veto; if they are willing to take it.
The offer has benefits for gay rights advocates and for Christie himself. Christie has said on countless occasions that he prefers the law as it stands in New Jersey – allowing for civil unions, but stopping short of marriage. At the same time, he has addressed the issue more with a shrug of his shoulders than the pounding of his fist.
The body language signals that Christie understands the trends are moving against him and he is not going to spend a great deal of his time, energy, or political capital fighting it. He is surrounded by states like New York, Connecticut, Delaware and Maryland that have moved – or are moving – past New Jersey on this issue (or taken a step back if you hold a different view).
The Wrong Side of Current Events
Northeast Republicans are traditionally more liberal on social issues and Christie understands there are great similarities between the views of his own constituents and voters living in adjacent states. Just in the last year, national public opinion polls show voters throughout the country dropping their automatic opposition to gay marriage in favor of one that favors privacy and a recognition that committed couples should have some basic universal rights regardless of gender.
A Quinnipiac Poll, released on January 19th, found 52% of New Jersey residents think same sex couples should have a right to marry. The same poll found that 65% don’t see gay marriage as a threat to marriage between a man and a woman. Fifty-three percent think denying marriage rights to gay couples constitutes discrimination.
Encouraged by last year’s dramatic approval of a gay marriage law in New York, with the help of a Republican controlled state Senate, New Jersey lawmakers are moving forward with legislation of their own this year. It seems quite plausible that the bill will make it to Christie’s desk, creating a problem for the first term governor, who has promised a veto, but doesn’t seem to want a fight. He gets much more worked up over budget and union issues.
If the bill comes to his desk he says he will feel compelled to reject it. So almost without being asked he offered a solution. Instead of deciding the issue in the state legislature – let the people decide. Put the issue of gay marriage to a referendum and he will not fight the outcome.
Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver(D) was quick to dismiss the idea. When Christie argued that putting the issue of civil rights to a referendum would have saved bloodshed and lives, Oliver took him to task for making such a comparison. “It took legislative action to bring justice to all Americans, just as legislative action is the right way to bring marriage equality to all New Jerseyans,” she said in a statement.
National Implications
Christie’s gay marriage referendum idea could have several political benefits for the governor. First, it could push the issue off the legislative agenda and possibly well off into the future. Second, it could save him the political need to veto a bill most New Jerseyans are not that concerned about. Third, it could save him the embarrassment of an attempt to over-ride his veto, no matter the outcome.  Assuming a referendum would pass, it would be like the governor allowing a bill to become law without his signature. As a national candidate, he could say he is opposed to gay marriage, but claim he was overruled by his constituents.
As a major surrogate for former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney(R), Christie talks often of President Obama’s lack of leadership. Ironically, the president and the governor seem to be in the same place on the gay marriage issue. Obama has not publicly endorsed it, but he has said, he is “evolving on the issue.” It’s a phrase carefully chosen to signal gay marriage supporters that he is probably for gay marriage, but not right now. Maybe not until he wins re-election.
Regardless of where you stand on the issue, it is fair to say both Obama and Christie are choosing to vote “present” for now.

Novak Djokovic Of Serbia (L) Embraces
Novak Djokovic Of Serbia EmbracesAUSTRALIAN OPEN: You gotta feel for poor Andy Murray, a really great tennis player who has the misfortune of playing during the same era as Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal andRoger Federer – a trio of greats who have won 30 grand slam singles titles between them.
The world’s fourth-ranked player and the runner-up at the Australian Open the last two years, Murray lost a dramatic five-set semifinal to Djokovic 6-3, 3-6, 6-7, 6-1, 7-5. The match lasted nearly five hours.
Djokovic will face Nadal on Sunday in the finals of a grand slam tournament for the third straight time. He beat the Spanish star in last year’s Wimbledon and US Open finals as well as in four other finals.
“I know that I maybe have a mental edge because I’ve won six finals. … We played in 2011 and I’ve had lots of success against him,” Djokovic said after the match. “That’s going to be my main priority and concern the next day and a half, to physically be able to perform my best and be ready to play five sets.
Murray said he is more encouraged than ever that he can break through and become the first British man to win a Grand Slam singles title since 1936.
“Tonight’s match was important for many reasons,” the 24-year-old said. “Obviously I wanted to win first and foremost. But also sort of after last year, the year that Novak’s had, I think there’s a very fine line between being No. 1 in the world and being 3 or 4. I think that gap, I feel tonight I closed it. My job over the next two or three months is to surpass him and the guys in front of me.”

Celebrities Get Almost Everything as Freebies

Sundance last week, Emma Roberts and William H. Macy walked out of the Gateway Center with leather jackets retailing between $595 and $695. Others got gift certificates for Apple TVs and iPads. Mary J. Blige picked up a $250 puffy jacket from Sean John while Andie MacDowell grabbed herself $200 Matt Bernson booties.
This is, actually, normal: On average, a regular red-carpet walker will receive about $100,000 in free goods and services annually, some in all-gratis pop-up shops and some unasked-for in the mail. The No. 1 freebie is apparel, from brands like Calvin Klein, Burberry, and John Varvatos. (Louis Vuitton is an exception: They won’t ever gift or even discount.) Then, consumer electronics: laptops and flat-screens. Celebs can afford to buy a new car every season but are often given free long-term leases from manufacturers like General Motors and Audi.

The minute any celebrity has a baby, she is targeted by diaper companies and stroller manufacturers. And it doesn’t stop when the kids start walking: When Tom Cruise threw a 17th-birthday party for his son Connor at the Staples Center, the event was sponsored, and Connor was showered with gifts, including cars. Even vacations get paid for. Resorts like the One & Only chain and Atlantis in the Bahamas will foot the bill for a celeb and entourage. At the Golden Globes, Air Pacific handed presenters like Johnny Depp and Jake Gyllenhaal two round-trip tickets to Fiji, as well as accommodations at a five-star resort. Total value: around $15,000.

Etta James Put To Rest { Her Record "At Last"Jumps Close To 400%}

The late, great Etta James makes a powerful impact on the Billboard charts this week, following her death on Jan. 20.

On the Billboard 200 chart, she nets her highest-charting album ever as "The Best of Etta James - 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection" rises from No. 162 to No. 46 with 8,000 sold (up 149% over the previous week) according to Nielsen SoundScan in a tracking week that reflected only two days of sales after her passing. Until this week, the R&B/blues legend had never gone higher than No. 68, when "At Last!" rose to that position in 1961.

For the week ending Sunday, Jan. 22, James' overall catalog of albums sold 30,000 copies. That marks a 378% increase over the previous week, when her collected albums moved just over 6,000 units.

James also debuts on the Billboard 200 at No. 59 with the 1997 hits collection "Her Best" (7,000; up 4,226%) and re-enters at No. 96 with the aforementioned "At Last!" (5,000; up 907%).

Her famed single "At Last" was her best-selling song of the week as well. It shifted 63,000 downloads, enabling its re-entry at No. 29 on the Digital Songs chart, with a weekly gain of 1,361%. "At Last" is one of James' 26 charting hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart -- it rose to a peak of No. 47 on Feb. 11. 1961. Though she's had higher-charting Hot 100 singles, "At Last" is arguably her signature recording -- even though she wasn't the first to sing it.

For the week, James' catalog of songs sold 118,000 downloads (more than half of that were "At Last's" sales) -- for an overall gain of 1,091% compared to last week.

Meanwhile, on the Billboard Hot 100 chart this week, James' voice continues to be heard on two different hits -- by way of a sample.

Her 1962 Hot 100 hit "Something's Got a Hold on Me" (which peaked at No. 37) is woven into both Avicii's "Levels" (No. 68) and Flo Rida's "Good Feeling" (No. 3)

Michael Fassbender Bares His Bud Again For SAS Commercial

Michael Fassbender, the Irish-German actor, who seems to get naked in each of his films, appears in the nude again in this delicious and sexy commercial from the ‘90s. Michael 34 has a new movie out called “Shame
Steve McQueen's sex addiction drama Shame came out lat December, and much of the attention centered on one unlikely but prominent co-star in the NC-17 film: Michael Fassbender's penis. "Some of us have them and most of the rest have seen them, so what's the big deal?" Fassbender griped to us earlier this month, but since Ewan McGregor in the nineties, few male stars have deigned to take it all off onscreen. Still, if there's one compelling reason to drop trou, it's for a hopeful awards season contender!

NBC Wants CNN To Remove Romney Ad!

NAACP Calls For Working Together With LGTB

Civil rights leader opens National Gay and Lesbian Task Force conference

The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, a LGBT rights organization, is holding a four day summit in Baltimore, Maryland.
Called the Creating Change conference,  Ben Jealous, the president and CEO of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, was its keynote speaker.
The NAACP is the oldest civil rights organization in the United States.
Jealous called for civil rights and LGBT organizations to rally around common causes.
'Unfortunately, the national media tends to exaggerate divisions between civil rights and LGBT institutions,' Jealous said as reported by the Root. 'But more damaging than the media's failure to recognize our common struggles is our own failure to come together on issues of common interest.'
Jealous has been instrumental in knocking down doors concerning black and LGBT rights. In September 2010, he was the first NAACP  sitting head to speak at the LGBT Community Center in New York City.
In July 2009 the civil rights group instituted its own LGBT Equality Task Force, in conjunction with the National Black Justice Coalition. Last year at its annual conference there was an LGBT town hall, a first in the association's history. Comedian Wanda Sykes and CNN anchor Don Lemon participated.

Nick Santin Killed Himself When His Dog was Euthanized { This is Dedicated to Friendship}

Nick wrote in his suicide note that he was wracked with grief over euthanizing his beloved pet dog Rocco. Nick Santino euthanized Rocco this past Tuesday, on Santino’s 47th birthday, under pressure from his apartment condo to get rid of the dog. "Today I betrayed my best friend and put down my best friend," Santino wrote in a suicide note, according to close friend Stuart Sarnoff. "Rocco trusted me and I failed him. He didn't deserve this."

Real friends stick together when times are tough,

Friendship is when people know all about you but like you anyway,

Friendship is when people know all about you but like you anyway,
Regardless of size,
How much money you have,
Shape,
Species,
Or age.
Real friends won't let you do stupid things alone,
They'll give you a ride,
Go for a ride,
Keep an eye out for you,
Have your back,
And stop you from doing something stupid.

Friendship isn't about whom you have known the longest... It's about who came, and never left your side.

Friendship isn't about whom you have known the longest... It's about who came, and never left your side.
Friend will keep you warm,
Give you a boost,
Be there when you're feeling down,
And be your eyes when you can't see.

Friends pick us up when we fall down, and if they can't pick us up, they lie down and listen for a while.

Friends pick us up when we fall down, and if they can't pick us up, they lie down and listen for a while.
True friends are forever.
