The Waters Run Red: Sea Shepherd

Dozens of Pilot Whales are Cowardly Murdered in the Faeroe Islands

Approximately 50 to 100 defenseless pilot whales were driven into a fjord at Vestmanna in the Faeroe Islands around noon today where every adult male, female, and calf was barbarically massacred in an orgy of blood that stained the waters a deep scarlet.
This shameful atrocity followed in the recent wake of Sea Shepherd’s departure from the Faeroes after successfully preventing all bloodshed for multiple months during Operation Ferocious Isles Pilot Whale Defense Campaign. Sea Shepherd’s limited budget dictated that we could only spend two months in the Faeroes and not a single whale was killed during this time.
During the months of July and August 2011 when Sea Shepherd vessels the Steve Irwin and the Brigitte Bardot were in the area, the Faeroese police advised all of the local communities to not kill any whales. It is estimated that 668 pilot whales were slain in the Faeroes during July and August 2010, compared to zero during the same months this year as a result of Sea Shepherd’s presence.
“I think that the Faeroese whalers are craven cowards,” said Captain Paul Watson. “They did not kill a single whale when we were there. They waited, knowing we would eventually have to leave, and within a week of our departure, they resumed their grisly and barbaric ritual of cruel and horrific slaughter. I have only one word to describe these killers and that word is – cowards.”
The killings today have vindicated Sea Shepherd’s presence and tactics in the Faeroes this summer. It is quite evident that if the Sea Shepherd ships and crew had not been in the isles for the past two months, hundreds of whales would have likely been butchered.
“They will now sit down to their mercury poisoned meal of whale flesh and blubber and they will snigger and boast of the lives they have so cruelly taken,” said Chief Cook and crewmember Laura Dakin of Australia. “It is easy to kill the defenseless, the babies and mothers, so easy to massacre creatures that can’t fight back. These men are pathetic cowards.”
Sea Shepherd plans to return to the Faeroes Islands next year in the summer of 2012 to once again patrol the waters in defense of the defenseless.

Pot enthusiasts freely light up at Oakland street festival

Big JayTouted by locals as the center of the medical marijuana industry, Oakland seems a fitting host for California's first marijuana outdoor street festival: the two-day International Cannabis and Hemp Expo, which opened its doors Saturday.
Spanning five downtown city blocks, the event is also the first of its kind to provide an open-air cannabis consumption area, where anyone with a doctor approval for cannabis use may smell, taste or otherwise imbibe an astonishing array of marijuana-based products -- from edibles and hash to massage oils and medicinal ointments. For this weekend only, card-carrying cannabis connoisseurs are invited to exercise their medicinal rights by lighting up on the steps of City Hall.
For many festivalgoers Saturday, smoking openly before the seat of local government was a surreal, if not long awaited, experience. While the sale and possession of marijuana remains a federal crime, despite medical marijuana laws in effect in California and 15 other states, no federal presence was visible in downtown Oakland yesterday. Even city police officers kept their distance, poised peaceably -- and, according to one officer, indifferently -- on the outskirts of the festival. Within the event, hired security did little more than give directions and check wristbands at entrances.
"For a long time we had to hide behind darkness, buying this stuff in alleys, where you're as afraid of the guy selling to you, as you are of the cops," said Angela Grasty, 27, a Harborside Health Center staffer. "So this is great. It feels good to let everyone see that it's not a bunch of riff-raff. Everybody's at peace, just living their day."

In NY We Got Gay marriage: are there any divorce numbers generally? yes a little

The ability to obtain a legal divorce is an important right for same-sex married couples. As Same Sex Couples Marry, Some Will Also Need to Divorce

New York made headlines earlier this summer when it passed legislation legalizing same-sex marriage. Homosexual couples in New York, and nationwide, celebrated the new law. Understandably, fewer headlines involved another right for same-sex couples -- the right to divorce. After all, for same sex couples seeking to spend their lives together in marriage, divorce is not something newlyweds are likely to immediately consider. Yet the ability to obtain a legal divorce is an important right for same-sex married couples.

No hard data exists on the divorce rate for gay couples in states that allow gay marriage. However, a study conducted by the University of California Los Angeles Law School's Williams Institute found that about 2 percent of same-sex couples dissolve their relationship in any given year, which is approximately the same rate as among heterosexual couples.

Despite an inability to predict with any certainty the divorce rate among homosexual couples in the future, certainly same-sex divorce will become an issue for many gay married couples.

Same-Sex Divorce Complications

Even before the new marriage law, New York allowed same-sex couples to divorce. However, the law was a mixture of various court rulings and judges' decisions, not something outlined clearly by statute. Now that same-sex marriage is considered equal to heterosexual marriage, the law surrounding divorce in New York just got a lot clearer. All of the rights given to heterosexual married couples, such as spousal support and property division, will now apply to married homosexual couples.

Some gray areas remain. If one member of the couple has a biological child, for example, and the other spouse has not legally adopted the child, it is not clear what rights the non-biological parent has regarding custody and visitation. A biological parent has certain constitutional rights to raise their children; a same-sex partner who shares in parental and financial responsibilities, but is not related by blood or adoption, does not share those same rights.

Contact a Family Law Attorney

While no one wants to get divorced, the legal ability to divorce is an essential part of family law and can protect divorced couples from insurmountable living expenses or child rearing costs.

In addition, while divorce is now less complicated and offers more protection for gay couples, a prenuptial agreement may still make sense for those with significant assets, children from a previous marriage or for those who want to spell out financial resources and obligations for the marriage.

If you are contemplating a divorce, prenuptial agreement or need more information, contact a family law attorney in your area.

UK: Powel Rodak21 Kills gay 64 yr Old University Lecturer Roger Gray

By Anna Gault

Roger Gray: Home was locked from the inside, said neighbour
THE killer of a retired university lecturer locked the victim’s flat from the inside in an apparent bid to slow down any rescue attempt.
A neighbour of Roger Gray today (tue) revealed he had a key to the dead man’s home but could not get in after smelling gas.
Bill Coventry said Mr Gray’s flat had been locked from the inside like “Fort Knox”.
It is thought the killer rigged up a gas explosion to destroy the crime scene and the door locked from the inside would have given the flames more time to take hold.
Detectives have confirmed that Mr Gray, 64, who was gay, was stabbed in a “sustained attack” at his home in Edinburgh’s upmarket Morningside.
Today new details also emerged about the Heriot-Watt lecturer’s lifestyle, including how gay and straight friends would mingle at parties in his Merchiston Crescent flat.
It has also been revealed that this is not the first tragedy to hit Mr Gray’s family. His elder brother committed suicide on a train line in the city.
And his sister died a few months ago, it is believed of natural causes.
Mr Coventry, 77, who lives in the flat above Mr Gray, raised the alarm on Saturday morning when he smelled gas from his bedroom.
Mr Coventry said he had a key to his neighbour’s flat as a result of an earlier flooding incident.
Mr Coventry said: “We were a very harmonious kind of house where we all help each other .
“I had a key to Roger’s flat because of a flood and because he didn’t have any family.”
But Mr Coventry admitted that on the morning of Mr Gray’s death he was unable to get into the flat.
He said: “I couldn’t get into his flat. It was locked from the inside because it was like Fort Knox.”
Mr Coventry said that he hammered on the door and shouted: “Roger! Roger! Roger!”
He added: “I went up and got the keys to Roger’s door. A mortice and a Yale and it wouldn’t open – so there must have been an additional lock behind the door.
“I certainly couldn’t get in.
“I’m glad I didn’t get in because it was full of gas and also he was there.“
The revelation raises the possibility that Mr Gray’s killer escaped by climbing out of a window in the first floor flat.
Mr Coventry also confirmed reports that his neighbour was gay.
He said: “He was just himself. He never said he was gay but he was. I mean everybody knew he was. But I mean he was courteous, he was a very intelligent man. He was utterly courteous and polite.
He added: “I didn’t go to all of Roger’s dos – he didn’t have a lot.
“I was at a party for his 64th birthday. They were informal and they were mostly Heriot-Watt faculty.
“There was a mixture of gay and straight people at them and they were all very nice people.”
He added that the parties were a very “Merchiston type of party”.
He said: “The party was people standing in wee groups chatting, having some nibbles and booze.
“It was the typical kind of party for older people. There were some younger students there but they were mature students, PHD students.
“There was background music playing but it wasn’t rock or heavy metal. It tended to be classical, Roger was a classical man.”
When asked about how he knew some of the people at the party were gay he said: “You just know. I’ve actually got gay friends. They are the nicest people you will ever meet in your life but you know they’re gay.
“They were not in your face they didn’t act gay, but the way they spoke and their mannerisms.
“I would say there was not more than 25 people and the parties and I would say most of them were straight.”
Mr Coventry said he was not aware of a “regular person” in his friend’s life.
He said: “There was a friend of his who was a surgeon and I met him several times. But I haven’t seen him for ages.”
And he revealed the tragic past of Mr Gray’s family.
He said: “I know that his brother committed suicide, because he told me.”
Mr Coventry lost his wife, Anna, and he remembers talking to Mr Gray about her death.
He said: “After Anna died I remember saying to him ‘God I wish I was dead’. Roger got very upset and said ‘Bill don’t say that, my brother committed suicide’.”
“And his sister died about a month ago. So I don’t think he’s got anybody.”
A death certificate for Mr Gray’s elder brother, William Morris Gray, reveals he was an architect and that he died after he was decapitated on a railway line near Stanley Place, Edinburgh, in 1987, aged 46.
Mr Gray’s sister, Sheila McNaughton McAra, died last October.
A death notice said she died peacefully in hospital, describing her as “much loved sister” of Roger and the late Morris. The notice suggested donations to cancer research.
Mr Coventry added that a large stone had been thrown through the window of Roger’s car when he was in China lecturing.
He added: “I went into his house and got the keys to his car.
“I drove the car into George’s driveway because it would have been vandalised and I left a wee note for Roger saying I hope you would do the same and he said yes he would.”
“This happened when a lot of reg plates in the area were stolen and they all happened at the same time but don’t think it was just an attack on him.”
A spokesman for Lothian and Borders Police said the death of Mr Gray was still being treated as suspicious.

Thousands primary school children have been labelled as homophobic

by James Park http://www.pinknews.co.uk/

Thousands of primary school aged children have been labelled as homophobic by their teachers in the past year, information released under the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act has revealed.
The Manifesto Club, requested the information after media reports last year of childrens’ permanent educational records including references to alleged homophobic bullying.
The FOI reveals that 20,400 primary school children were labelled as homophobic or racist during the past academic year, the youngest child being just four years old.
One alleged homophobic incident at a school in the London borough of Barnet showed that two year four children (aged eight or nine) argued over an eraser and called each other “gay” and “lesbian”.
More than one in every hundred primary school pupils in Leeds and Birmingham were reported for hate speech. Some local authorities even recorded incidents with children at nursery schools.
“There’s no doubting that children say some really nasty and horrible things, but this approach is squeezing the meaning out of childhood,” Adrian Hart of the Manifesto Club told the Sunday Times. “Children are seldom, if ever, homophobic or racist in the way this approach imagines. Children simply access words they hear around them and re-deploy them, often without understanding their meaning.”

Virginia For Lovers? Never! Alaska? Yeap!

 Time Magazine

broken-heart

Since 1969, we've believed that Virginia was the lovers' state, thanks to a misleading tourism campaign. Turns out, we've been wrong all along.
In an attempt to determine the "sultriest state", Mental Floss has looked at the data across six sexy categories — birth rate, marriage rate, wine sales, cut flower sales, bed and breakfasts, and Marvin Gaye listens — to see which state tops the lists.
For the full effect of Mental Floss's findings, you really need to check out their great chart, but here are a few highlights:
The Most Baby-loving State: Utah has the highest birthrate, with 20.3 births per 1,000 people.
The Most Marriage-loving State: Nevada has the most marriages, with 40.9 unions per 1,000 people. (We wonder what percentage of those are in Vegas.)
The Most Wine-loving State: New Hampshire is apparently full of lushes, with 6.26 gallons of wine consumed per capita.
The Most Flower-loving State: Hawaii wins this category.
The Most Bed and Breakfast-loving State: Alaska has the most B&Bs in the country.
The Most Marvin Gaye-loving State: Nebraskans listen to the sexy crooner more than anyone else, according to Last.fm.
Overall Loviest State: Alaska is the true state state for lovers, with Virginia coming in at number 17. (For shame, Virginia!)

Rick Santorum Fighting APA on Same Sex Marriage

Article By   in CONTROVERSIES
Speaking to a group of Penn State students, including members of the College Republicans, on Wednesday, the night before his interview with CNN’s Piers Morgan aired, Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum boiled with outrage over Morgan’s assertion that his attitude on homosexuality was “bordering on bigotry.”
“So now I’m a bigot because I believe what the Bible teaches,”  Santorum said. “And of course we don’t elect bigots to office.”
When a woman interjected, saying “It is extremely unfair for you to say there are no social science reports that suggest that children are OK in a same sex relationships,” Santorum became agitated, even snapping back at one point, “That’s not the point, lawyer.”
He also dismissed the American Psychological Association’s research on homosexuality. “All these associations prove is that they have a point of view and the people who join them, they agree with that point of view,” he said. “The American Psychological Association is not proof of anything.”
In response to Santorum, APA spokeswoman Kim Mills told TIME, “The American Psychological Association’s position in support of same-sex marriage is based on a body of empirical research concerning sexual orientation and marriage. APA believes that it is unfair and discriminatory to deny same-sex couples legal access to civil marriage and all its attendant benefits, rights and privileges.” The APA’s amicus brief for California’s Proposition 8 suit cited nearly 90 medical, pediatric, and psychological studies supporting this position and argued that children of same-sex couples will benefit if their parents are allowed to marry.
