Kevin Keller may find himself dead square in the national debate over gays in the military because of his dad.
Keller, the first openly gay character in Archie Comics’ 70-year history, is loud and proud of his father, a retired Army colonel, in a four-issue miniseries debuting next week.
Archie, Veronica, Jughead and the rest of the Riverdale gang are puzzled given their pal’s sexual orientation. They’re even more perplexed when Kevin’s mom calls her son her “future military man.”
The miniseries debuts Wednesday, and will be released monthly.
Writer and artist Dan Parent says Kevin’s relationship with his father is a key plank of the character’s identity, just as much as his being gay.
“We just wanted to show a healthy father-son relationship where Kevin’s sexuality wasn’t an issue, similarly to the reaction he got from the gang in Riverdale,” Parent said.
He talked to numerous children of career military members, and found that they all shared the same bond with family.
“There’s a certain thing Army brats have in common, and its that feeling of not getting too comfortable in one spot because you really don’t know how long you’ll be there,” Parent said. “And, maybe not in all cases, but I think in many, there’s a closer family bond because all you have from place to place is that immediate family to rely on.”
Throughout the story arc, Kevin’s homosexuality is one of many threads of the tale of a teenager who aspires to be a journalist but only after attending the U.S. Military Academy and becoming an Army officer.
Jon Goldwater, co-chief executive of Archie Comics, said Kevin is not meant to be a divisive figure.
“The way it’s presented is done with such a light touch. It’s kind of the way Dan introduced Kevin,” he said. “We’re not trying to come across as preachy or heavy-handed or even political.”
He dismissed claims that the character is a publicity stunt aimed at boosting sales or generating buzz.
“He’s going to be part of the Archie world. We have many plans for him, from the licensing side as well,” Goldwater said.
The first issue of the miniseries outlines Kevin’s coming out to his dad, asking him if he should rethink his decision to pursue a military career.
“On the contrary! I don’t want to stop you,” Col. Keller says. “It takes a special person to serve their country. Someone with heart and courage!”
Parent said he was writing the story when Congress voted to allow gays to serve openly in the military.
“Even though we don’t tackle the specific issue of ‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell,’ the goal was to show that patriotism knows no specific gender, race or sexual orientation,” Parent said.
“While it sounds like heavy subject matter, I tried to show it simply that Kevin, like his dad, loves his country. Being gay doesn’t effect that in any way.”

A homophobic Facebook Paged Removed

A homophobic Facebook group called The New Anti-Gay Movement has now been removed from the site.
The administrators of the now-removed group had stated: “This page is for those of us against ALL gays, man and woman alike. Those of us who are tired of seeing them flaunt it like it is a badge of honor and acceptable. Spread it like wildfire. Suggest to all your friends.”
A comment in response to complaints from other Facebook users read: “And go ahead and report this page all you want. It attacks nobody directly and is in complete compliance with my rights as a citizen of [the] USA.”
Facebook’s Terms of Service state: “You will not post content that: is hateful, threatening, or pornographic; incites violence; or contains nudity or graphic or gratuitous violence.”
The New Anti-Gay Movement’s response to messages to the above effect as posted by pro-gay users was this: “By definition this page does not in any way or form count as ‘hate speech’. While there is a very thin line, this is on the proper side of it. It does not promote violence, intimidation, harassment or other misconducted [sic] actions. It exists solely as a point of view to be shared by others that share the same ideal. Our right to voice our feelings towards gays is no more in the wrong than your option to voice an opinion FOR it.”

Stephen Fry Opens Up About Bipolar Says 'One Day I may kill myself'

Stephen Fry has opened up about his bipolar disorder, saying he finds the demands of fame 'exhausting' and that he may one day kill himself.
In an interview with Sky Arts, the 53-year-old broadcaster said: 'The fact that I am lucky enough not to have it so seriously doesn't mean I won't one day kill myself - I may well.'
Fry came close to committing suicide in 1995 after walking out of the West End play Cell Mates, which had suffered poor reviews.
He fled Britain by ferry and was missing, feared dead, for a week before he resurfaced in Belgium.
He later revealed that he almost gassed himself in his car before escaping the country, but 'I had this image of my parents staring right in at me...
so I decided not to do it'.
Elsewhere in the interview Fry admits he finds fame 'exhausting', saying: 'most of the time the phone rings, most of the time there's an email, most of the time there's a letter, someone wants something of you.
'They want to touch the hem of the fame, not the hem of the person.'
Despite being constantly on Twitter, he added that he feels 'over-exposed' and would 'just like to be in the country making pork pies and chutneys and never have to poke my head out of the parapet'.
On the Sky Arts programme In Confidence, Fry also talks about his 15-year addiction to cocaine, revealing he used to take it to enhance his enjoyment of crossword puzzles.

Wanda Sykes: "No Body Was More Shock When I Came Out Than Me"

Wanda-sykes
The stand-up comic and actress is a guest on Thursday's "Piers Morgan Tonight."
Sykes publicly came out in November 2008 at a rally after California voters passed Proposition 8, a ban on same-sex marriage. She gave an impromptu speech at the event, which she told Morgan she had "no intentions" of making.
"I kind of shocked myself," the comedian told the CNN host. "I was in the middle of it, and it was from anger."
Sykes, who was married to a man from 1991 to 1998, married her female partner, Alex, in October 2008. The couple met in 2006.
When Morgan asked her about the pros and cons of coming out, Sykes said the best thing was she had "absolutely nothing to hide. I mean, I am what I am and this is it. So now, you know, you thought I had a big mouth before, now it's just crazy. I'm like over the top, you know. There's nothing that I can't say.
"The worst thing, I guess, is just dealing with it, you know, like with family, and it's not necessarily the worst thing but, man, it's like every day I get invited to some gay event, you know. It's like, can you come to this gay event? Can you come support this? And it's like, good Lord, if I go show up at all these gay events, I'm not going to make any money. I'm going to be a broke gay. I'm going to be the brokest lesbian out there."
When the subject turned to recent political scandals such as the fallout over a lewd picture sent from Rep. Anthony Weiner's Twitter account, Sykes told Morgan, "OK, here's the thing. The man's last name is Weiner so, you know, I kind of believe that he gets all the wiener jokes, you know? He's probably been doing this since fifth grade, sixth grade, people been calling him wiener, look at my wiener. ..."
Morgan asked Sykes how she thought President Barack Obama -- whom the comedian supported as a candidate -- was doing.
"I think he's doing a great job," Sykes said. "The thing is, people don't realize how screwed up the country was, you know? He pretty much pulled it out of the pits. And I think he's doing a great job."
She continued, "He's a thinker. He's very thoughtful, and we're not used to that. We're used to fly-off-the-handle, crazy presidents. 'Let's just go blow stuff up,' you know?"
When Morgan called the killing of Osama bin Laden "an extraordinary moment for Obama," which -- had it not worked, "could have been disastrous for him," Sykes nodded her head.
"Totally," Sykes agreed. "He made the right decision. He got the information. He had his advisers, the military, and he told them what the deal was and he said, 'OK, let's -- let's do it!' "

The Obama Administration has unveiled a new website providing resources for LGBT Americans and highlighting President Obama’s accomplishments and initiatives on behalf of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. Dubbed “Winning the Future,” the site constitutes the first LGBT-oriented constituency webpage in the nation’s history.
Brian Bond, gay liaison for the White House, told the Dallas Voice that the site is intended to keep constituents up to date on the Administration’s efforts on behalf of LGBT individuals.
The website includes a homepage with LGBTQ political and legislative news highlights, a fact sheet, and resources to help visitors find more information on HIV/AIDS, anti-discrimination and DADT. “Wining the Future” also includes links to a blog and to President Obama and other administrative officials’ video messages for the It Gets Better anti-bullying and suicide prevention campaign.

Weiner's Friend, Jon Stewart - Went for the Wiener in his Show (video)

"The silliness of the wiener story could make a smart politician looked so dumb it could derail a career."

On Thursday’s Daily Show, Jon Stewart seemed a little more than surprised at Rep. Anthony Weiner’s answer to questions about whether or not a lewd photo his Twitter account sent out was of him. He told MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow, “I can’t say for sure.”
“There are three things in this world that I do have certitude on,” Stewart responded. “Empire Strikes Back is the best Star Wars movie. O.J. killed those two people. And the third one… is what my erect penis looks like in my own underwear — from a bird’s eye view of course.”

Mister Cee pleaded guilty to loitering after cops busted him receiving oral sex from a male companion.
Popular Hot 97  radio deejay "Mister Cee" 'fessed up Wednesday to a penal code violation: receiving oral sex from another man in a parked car.
Cee, 44, whose real name is Calvin LeBrun, pleaded guilty to a charge of loitering for the purpose of engaging in a prostitution offense.  He and his much younger companion, Lawrence Campbell, 20, were busted March 30 at 4 a.m. at Watts and West streets.
He was ordered to complete three months, or 12 sessions, of counseling with a doctor, officials said.
This was Cee's second conviction on the same charge. The music man was busted in lower Manhattan last Oct. 8 and pleaded guilty a month later, officials said.
Cee made a name for himself in the hip-hop world as Big Daddy Kane's deejay.  He later produced "Ready to Die," Notorious B.I.G.'s first album.
On Hot 97, he hosts "Throwback at Noon," a classic hits hour. At the time of his arrest a station manager told the Daily News the allegations were untrue.
Station officials did not return calls after his guilty plea.
His lawyer also could not be reached for comment.
Campbell, 20, who had no previous criminal record, was given an adjournment in contemplation of dismissal - meaning that if he stays out of trouble for six months, the case will be cleared from his record, officials said.

Two Yr. Anniversary for London's Gay Penguins

Penguins8Employees at the Sea Life London Aquarium are helping two of their newest inhabitants – a pair of gay penguins - celebrate their two year anniversary, this week.

The couple are part of a colony of Gentoo Penguins, who typically live on sub-Antarctic territories including the Falkland Island.

The pair, Daley and Michael – named after Olympic champs Daley Thompson and Michael Phelps by the public in an online poll – arrived at their specially-built Antarctic home Penguins: Ice Adventure at the Sea Life London Aquarium, last month.

According to Penguin Aquarist Rachel Wickes they have settled in together well. She told PinkPaper.com: “They like to eat next to each other and are never far apart – since being in their icy new home they’ve gone from strength to strength!”.
