The Columbus Dispatch reports the Unioto High School student whoviciously attacked his gay classmate has been sentenced to 90 days in a juvenile detention center.
The beating gained national attention after a cell phone video of the attack was uploaded to YouTube and quickly went viral.
Levi Sever, 15, had previously pleaded guilty to a delinquency count of assault and was sentenced on November 28, by Juvenile Court Judge Richard Ward.
Zach Huston, 15, and his mother both say he was targeted because he was gay when he was attacked by Sever on October 17 in his Unioto High School classroom.
Prosecutor Matthew Schmidt said Server has been ordered to undergo mental health counseling and will continue his education during his detention.
Sever’s initial punishment, a 3-day suspension, was criticized by Huston and his mother, Rebecca Collins, as an inappropriate response to antigay bullying and the American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio has threatened the school district with legal action unless better protections from bullying are enacted.
School officials declined to comment on Server’s discipline and have refused to address the ACLU’s request as well.
