21 Yr Sentence for the Murder Of Gay Classmate Lawrence King

Brandon McInerney will be sentanced to 21 years in state prison for the killing of Lawrence King at the E.O. Green Junior High School in Oxnard. McInerney, who is now 17, murdered King in the computer lab of the school. At the time, McInerney was 14 and King was 15. A mistrial was declared in September because jurors could not reach an unanimous decision on the degree of guilt, and many thought he should have been tried as a child.
The murder occurred because King was openly gay.
A deal was reached in Ventura County last month whereby McInerney pled guilty to second-degree murder and avoid a second trial. He also pled guilty to one count of voluntary manslaughter and use of a firearm.
A feud between the McInerney and King was brewing before the February 2008 shooting. According to McInerney, he had reached an emotional breaking point after King had made repeated sexual advances towards him and others.
According to Ventura County Chief Deputy District Attorney Mike Frawley, the plea deal also accounts for time served. He stated that “The total time in custody for 25 years will do that.”
That leaves 21 years in prison for McInerney. He will be released just before he turns 39.
