Alabama’s strict new immigration laws have not only been felt on Hispanics, but also now on a European auto business executive.
The Associated Press reports that a German manager with Mercedes-Benz was arrested in Tuscaloosa, Alabama for not having a driver’s license with him in the state’s crackdown on non-U.S. citizens.
The 46-year-old was charged with violating the immigration law for not having his paperwork, although he was released later after an associate gathered his visa, passport, and German driver’s license to authorities.
Mercedes Ben spokesperson Felyicia Jerald said, was an unfortunate situation, but the incident was resolved when our colleague was able to provide his driver’s license and other documents to Tuscaloosa police.”

Alabama’s law has come under heavy criticism not just from civil rights activists and politicians, but also the state’s farmers who indicate that they are having difficulty replacing undocumented immigrants because of the law. An economist at the University of Alabama said the state plans to lose $40 million if undocumented immigrants stopped working there.
