It’s been a seemingly endless cycle of boom and bust for Republican presidential hopefuls over the last few months. First Michele Bachmann took a surprising lead, winning the Iowa straw poll and enjoying a couple of months at the head of the pack. Then a series of gaffes and misstatements cost her dearly in the polls and Texas governor Rick Perry took the mantle. Perry held on the lead for a few precious weeks before he was supplanted by Herman Cain. The “Cain Train” has recently jumped the tracks and now, of all people, Newt Gingrich is in the lead.
On last night’s Daily Show, Jon Stewart looked back over the months since the GOP primaries began, noting that the political pundits have been quick to celebrate each front-runner and then just as quick to declare their candidacies “dead” when each one’s shortcomings caught up to them. “And yet somehow,” he says, “the zombies continue to be allowed to the podium. You know why that freaks me out? These people don’t even know they’re dead.” The whole field, he says, is like an M. Night Shyamalan movie.
