Why Michael Fassbender's 'Shame' Earned an NC-17 Rating

Michael Fassbender has no problem with full frontal nudity in his new film,Shame, but the MPAA does, giving it an NC-17 rating.
All because Fassbender showed his naughty bits?
Yep.

An NC-17 rating all but ensures that not much of an audience will get to see the flick in which Fassbender plays a man with a sex addiction.
The fact that he's naked in parts of the film is less about shock factor and more about the necessity to tell the story. He is a sex addict, after all.

Fassbender is a definite up-and-comer, having appeared in 300Inglorious Basterds, and X-Men, but he isn't in it just for the high profile roles, taking on indie work in Hunger and now,Shame.
Fassbender explains in a Huffington Post interview how he prepared for the role of Brandon in Shame by talking with real sex addicts, including one guy who really helped him understand the part.
He explains, "I got a real sort of insight into this difficulty that Brandon has with intimacy. It was exactly the same condition that this guy had, and you just realize, very quickly, how real this condition is and how it can tear lives apart. And it definitely made it clear to me that this is a real addiction, even though it hasn't been recognized officially as one.”

Michael Fassbender Doesn't Mind Appearing Nude in 'Shame'

Some actors have no qualms with baring it all in movies. Michael Fassbender happens to be one of them.
Sigh.
It seems that being naked is really no big deal for a lot of actors - if it's part of the art of it all, they say, then why not let your bits out for the world to see?

Actors also tend to like to be the center of attention -- that couldn't have anything to do with it, right?
There are always those actors who are uncomfortable with nudity, requiring the butt double (or other body part double) to do his or her thing.
Fassbender and co-star Carey Mulligan dished on their roles in Shame and the whole nudity issue. Or non-issue, as the case may be.

This isn't just your glimpse at side boob or casual butt shot. Nope, Fassbender is full on, full-frontal naked during a sex scene that landed the film an NC-17 rating.
(Mulligan, for those interested, also appears nude in a shower scene.)

In the film, Fassbender plays a sex addict, whose sister (Mulligan) comes to live with him.
Fassbender explains to E! Online why appearing nude is something he's gotten over: "You know, it's always awkward getting naked and masturbating -- well, simulating it at least -- with a bunch of strangers in the room. But you gotta get over that and get on with the telling of the story."
The rising Irish/German star also shares how the sex scenes in Shame are critical, noting, "The scenes where there are sexual encounters with the characters are so important in terms of where he's at and what his mental state is. It's not about titillation and exploitation."
Dang.
