LaBeouf was repeatedly hit in the head, then chased after his attacker. But someone held the actor back and told him, "You gotta lay low right now."
"I walked out to have a cigarette. I was away with some friends. Some guys instigated me and that's what it was. Some name calling," the actor told The Ellen DeGeneres Show in May. "I didn't know them."

Shia LaBeouf was repeatedly PUNCHED IN THE HEAD by a shirtless, hairy-bellied man on a Vancouver sidewalk last week -- and TMZ has obtained footage of the brutal ass whooping.
It's unclear exactly what provoked the attack -- but we're told Shia originally got into it with the man inside a bar called Cinema Public House ... and after security kicked them both out, the man tore off his shirt and unleashed the fury all over Shia's face.
Moments after the attack, Shia tries to chase after the guy -- but someone who appears to be his friend holds him back, telling him, "You gotta lay low right now!"
A rep for Cinema Public House tells TMZ, no one on staff noticed the brawl outside -- but the rep confirms ... Shia has been a regular at the place since he's been in town to shoot "The Company You Keep.”
Shia LaBeouf was repeatedly punched in the head by a shirtless man on a Vancouver sidewalk last week. The video shows the 25-year-old being repeatedly pummeled in the head.
LaBeouf and his attacker were clearly angry with one another , but it's unclear what provoked their fight. Sources told the site that the former Transformers star and the man initially got into an argument inside a bar called Cinema Public House and were kicked out by security. It was outside on the sidewalk that the actor and the unidentified man -- who ripped off his shirt -- really got into it.
This isn't the first time the former Disney star's temper has gotten him into trouble. In Feb. 2010, a heated bar fight landed him in handcuffs.
"It was just an awkward situation," he lamented. "I'm not trying to challenge anybody either… People get drunk, people get crazy."
