Serena Williams Gets Fined, Again,
Oh, but this is not the first time Serena has been fined. After the jump, a full rundown.
- During a match against Kim Clijsters at the US Open in 2009, Serena let out a full-scale tirade on a line judge. “I swear to God I’m [expletive] going to take this [expletive] ball and shove it down your [expletive] throat, you hear that? I swear to God,” she yelled. She was fined $10,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct plus $500 for racquet abuse, when she smashed her record on the court. [NY Times]
- Shortly after, the Grand Slam Committee reviewed the incident. To avoid suspension, they fined Serena $82,500 if she could go for a two year probationary period without another incident and $175K if she could not. It does not appear that this weekend’s snafu incurred the higher fine for Williams, so we are doing our calculations with the lower number. [NY Times]
- About a year later, Serena got in hot water along with her sister after they lost in a doubles match at Wimbeldon. The two failed to appear afterward at a press conference and were charged $4K for skipping. They sais they did not know the event was mandatory. [LA Times]
