Trouble, Leona Hemsley Dog Dies at 12 with $12 Million in Doggie Bag
Trouble, the beloved dog of wealthy real estate mogul Leona Helmsley, has passed away at the age of 12.
When Helmsley died in 2007, she left $12 million to the dog. The amount was later lowered to $2 million by a judge.
Since Helmsley’s death, Trouble has been taken care of by Carl Lekic, the general manager of the Helmsley Sandcastle hotel in Florida. According to the New York Daily News, Trouble lived on $100,000 a year, which included $8,000 for grooming and $1,200 for food. The rest went to her caretaker and a security guard.
Trouble died in December, but news of her death was only recently released. Though Helmsley wanted Trouble to be buried with her in a family mausoleum in Westchester County, NY, pets are not allowed in the cemetery.
According to spokeswoman Eileen Sullivan, “Trouble was cremated, and her remains are being privately retained. The funds held in trust for her care have reverted to The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust for charitable purposes.”
