Elton John has called on Kings of Leon to "lighten up" over their recent disagreements with Glee creator Ryan Murphy.

Murphy and band member Nathan Followill engaged in a public spat last year, after it was revealed that Kings of Leon had denied Murphy the opportunity to perform the song 'Use Somebody' in an episode of the series.

John has now spoken out in defence of Glee during an appearance on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.

"It's a compliment when someone records or does one of your songs," John told the talkshow host. "It doesn't matter if it's a bad version, it's just a compliment, so I've never lost that thrill."

"Lighten up, you assholes," John then added, directed towards both Kings of Leon and other bands who have criticized the Fox show.

John has previously admitted that he would be interested in guest-starring on Glee if Murphy were to offer him a part.

Glee is scheduled to return in the US on April 19, and continues in the UK on Mondays at 9pm on E4.
