Disgraced NYC Police Chief Bernie Kerik Reports to Prison

Former 'America's Cop' Begins 4-Year Sentence for Tax Fraud, Lying to White House

Bernard Kerik, the former New York City police commissioner who was dubbed "America's Cop" for his leadership after Sept. 11, reported to a minimum-security federal prison camp in Cumberland, MD Monday to begin serving a four year sentence for tax fraud and lying to theWhite House.

Kerik left his New Jersey home in blue jeans and a tan jacket, the last outfit he'll freely choose for the next four years. Now, he'll be expected to wear a "khaki uniform with the shirt tail tucked in," according to the Bureau of Prisons.
Kerik said nothing to reporters as he left his New Jersey home this morning, but in a statement on his company's website, he said he was the victim of a "grave injustice" and claimed he pleaded guilty because he was "financially helpless."

Reporting for prison completes a stunning fall for someone whose reputation once took on heroic proportions following the attacks of September 11.
Prosecutors had alleged that Kerik, while New York City Correction Commissioner - a post he held prior to his appointment as Police Commissioner by Rudolph Giuliani - allowed a construction company to pay for renovations to his Bronx apartment in the hope that he would help the company obtain a city license.

Kerik's statement said he hoped the sentence would be "remedied by an appellate court."Kerik pleaded guilty to multiple counts of tax fraud and obstruction, including making false statements when he was vetted to be Secretary of Homeland Security in the Bush Administration. The crimes called for a sentence of two to three years but Judge Stephen C. Robinson in White Plains, NY sentenced Kerik to more than that because of "the almost operatic proportions of this case."
His time at FCI Cumberland begins with a medical screening and a psychological evaluation. He'll be required to work either in landscaping, food service, plumbing or other such occupation and will live in dormitory style housing and sleep in a bunk bed.

The girl's Fam.That Asked the President The Immigration Q. Wont Be Deported

Washington (CNN) -- Immigration officials will not swoop in to deport a woman whose daughter asked first lady Michelle Obama about "taking people away" if they don't have proper paperwork, a Department of Homeland Security spokesman said Thursday.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement investigations are based on "solid law enforcement work and not classroom Q and As," said DHS spokesman Matt Chandler. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is a part of DHS.
The statement comes after a student concerned about her mother's legal status asked the first lady about the president's immigration policies Wednesday.
"My mom said, I think that she says that, Barack Obama is going to take away everybody that doesn't have papers," the young girl told Mrs. Obama as she visited a Washington-area school with Mexican first lady Margarita Zavala.
The unscripted moment was sandwiched between examples of Michelle Obama's signature policy initiatives -- a lesson on healthy eating and an exercise session -- and forced the first lady to walk the fine line of immigration reform policy language.
     .
Dana Tofig, a spokesman for Montgomery County, Maryland, schools, said the district would not identify the student and does "not ask about the immigration status of our students and their families."
"There was a Supreme Court decision that makes it clear that if there's proof of residency in the county, then we educate the child," Tofig said.
"And we're not going to identify the student or her parents. We protect the identity of our students."
Immigration took center stage in Washington on Wednesday as the president welcomed his Mexican counterpart, Felipe Calderon, to the White House.
Both leaders used the occasion -- the fourth time they have met for bilateral talks -- to take sharp aim at Arizona's controversial new law meant to crack down on illegal immigrants.
Calderon characterized the measure as discriminatory; Obamacalled it a "misdirected expression of frustration."
Obama also repeated his call for a comprehensive immigration overhaul.

Washington (CNN) -- The U.S. and its military allies agree on many things, from the size of bullets for their rifles to the design of future fighter jets. But on the issue of gays in the military, the United States stands alone among its Western allies.
Representatives from Great Britain, Canada, Australia, Israel and the Netherlands gathered Wednesday at the Brookings Institution, a think tank in Washington, to describe how the militaries in those countries handled allowing homosexuals to serve openly. The consensus was that, in spite of concerns before the change, it became a nonissue once gays and lesbians were allowed to serve.
"I did not see one case at any level when homosexuals did not get along with other soldiers. The problems are among men and women," said Maj. Gen. Walter Semianiw, an infantry officer in the Canadian military. "This is not an issue for our country."
"We know the U.S. as a country that favors the individual rights, freedom, giving the people the opportunity to flourish in their life," said Col. Kees Matthijssen of the Royal Dutch Army. "From that perspective it's still very strange the U.S. is still having a kind of ban on openly having gays and lesbians in the military."
"There were concerns in the late '90s of gay men walking across the gangplank in feather boas and high heels," said retired Lt. Cmdr. Craig Jones of the British Royal Navy. "That just did not happen."
Jones said British military officials saw an unexpected benefit of allowing gays to serve openly -- better retention of qualified soldiers and sailors in key positions. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, the British military had a 6 percent to 8 percent gap in unfilled positions. Now it's down to the 2 percent to 3 percent range.
Jones said one reason for that is the new policy allowing gays to serve.
Now that gays are able to serve, military recruiters in the United Kingdom have more volunteers to choose from, Jones said. Also, having children is often cited by British troops as one reason why they leave the military in their late 20s or 30s. Jones said because gays and lesbians are less likely to become parents, they tend to stay in the military longer.
During a recent congressional hearing on the U.S. military's "don't ask, don't tell," policy, retired NATO Commander Gen. John Sheehan testified that he believed the Dutch military's policy of allowing gays to serve was in part to blame for the Dutch military's failure to halt the massacre of Muslims in the Bosnian town of Srebrenica in 1995.
Sheehan later backtracked on his testimony, but Matthijssen of the Dutch army addressed the comments.
"I was in Srebrenica myself, I was a company commander, I was there. I had a full professional company," Matthijssen said.
"The homosexual, sexuality that he suggested would have affected that unit, that is absolutely not the case."
Matthijssen said, "There was good cohesion within the unit, the unit was effective. But the unit was put in a place -- based on political decisions within the U.N., within the international community -- with too [few] troops, too few means, not the mandate to really fight and overwhelm ... That's what really happened."
Matthijssen said allowing gays to serve openly has made the Royal Dutch Army better.
"We're much more effective because we have an organizational culture and climate that people know that they can tell about who they are, and that's what we encourage," he said.

Scientists Create New Artificial Life...No is not Sarah Palin

Scientists Create ‘Artificial Life’

This will either end greatly or horribly: American scientists announced on Thursday that they have created the “first synthetic living cell.” Dr. Craig Venter and a team of scientists created a synthetic genome that can be transplanted into a host cell; the cell then behaves according to what is “dictated” by the synthetic DNA. Venter explained, "As soon as this new software goes into the cell, the cell reads [it] and converts into the species specified in that genetic code." Scientists hope that such cells will one day produce medicines and fuels and absorb greenhouse gases. Some scientists worry though that the cells could be dangerous: "If you release new organisms into the environment, you can do more harm than good," said Dr. Helen Wallace of GeneWatch UK. "By releasing them into areas of pollution, you're releasing a new kind of pollution.”

Rand Paul: 'I Abhor Racial Discrimination' but.......

Rand Paul: 'I Abhor Racial Discrimination'

It seems that after failing to answer a yes or no question about whether the Woolworth lunch counter should have stayed segregated in the 1960s, Rand Paul has found his words. The Republican Senate nominee in Kentucky issued a long statement Thursday stressing that he would not back any repeal of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. "I have clearly stated in prior interviews that I abhor racial discrimination and would have worked to end segregation," Paul said. Still, he tiptoed around his main source of disagreement with the bill, which he says he believes does more than the federal government should be allowed. "This much is clear: The federal government has far overreached in its power grabs," he said in the statement.

Facebook and the "Modern" Couple

Facebook and the "Modern" Couple

Two very different controversies involving gay life and the entertainment world are playing out on Betty White's favorite site

By JERE HESTER
Updated 12:45 AM EDT, Fri, May 14, 2010
In the latest episode of "Modern Family," uptight lawyer Mitchell, half of the most loveable couple of the TV season, is having trouble taking it easy, even on a trip to Hawaii.
“I just don’t find relaxing that relaxing,” he said.
The line, no doubt written months ago, inadvertently played on another level. Wednesday’s broadcast came after the program’s producers asked for patience in response to the Facebook campaign demanding that Mitchell and his life partner, Cam, kiss on the show.
“It happens that we have an episode in the works that addresses Mitchell's slight discomfort with public displays of affection,” said the statement, released to AfterElton.com.  “It will air in the fall and until then, as [goofball dad] Phil Dunphy would say, everyone please chillax.
Meanwhile, another controversy involving gays and the entertainment world is also playing out online: "Glee" creator Ryan Murphy is calling for a boycott of Newsweek unless there’s an apology for an opinion piece by a gay writer that seemed to suggest homosexual actors shouldn't portray straight characters.
The requisite "Boycott Newsweek" Facebook page is up, and off to a modest start.
It's another a sign of the "modern" media times. Facebook is increasingly being used to promote campaigns – whether overtly political (the Obama presidential run and Sarah Palin's not-so-stealthy White House bid), fun TV camp (the successful Betty White/“Saturday Night Live” push) or as the latest gay-themed examples show, a mix of social movements and entertainment.
But does everybody just need to "chillax?"
The premise of "Modern Family" is that an extended, blended clan of eccentric characters is being filmed for some kind of unspecified reality show. Mitchell, unlike the outgoing Cam, clearly doesn’t like the cameras. He’s the most tightly wound of the bunch, and any attempts at loosening up end in disaster (in the latest episode, Mitchell accidentally leaves his and Cam’s baby daughter Lilly in an elevator when he lets his guard down for a moment).
Actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who plays Mitchell, reportedly tweeted his support for the Facebook smooch campaign (the page is called “Let Cam & Mitchell Kiss on Modern Family”). It’s unclear, though, what Ferguson, a gay man who has played heterosexual characters, thinks of the Newsweek piece by Ramin Setoodeh.
Setdoodeh’s essay prompted a backlash – most prominently from Murphy, who called the piece “mind-blowingly bigoted,” and actress Kristin Chenoweth, who slammed the article as “horrendously homophobic.” The piece criticizes openly-gay actor Sean Hayes (Jack from “Will & Grace”) who plays a straight character opposite Chenoweth in the Broadway revival of “Promises, Promises.”
“Frankly, it's weird seeing Hayes play straight,” Setdoodeh writes. “He comes off as wooden and insincere, like he's trying to hide something, which of course he is.”
He also takes aim at this season’s subplot on “Glee” (Chenoweth has a recurring role on the show) that has openly gay actor Jonathan Groff’s character wooing teen diva Rachel. “There's something about his performance that feels off,” Setdoodeh writes. “In half his scenes, he scowls – is that a substitute for being straight? When he smiles or giggles, he seems more like your average theater queen, a better romantic match for [gay glee club member] Kurt than Rachel.”
Setdoodeh notes that Groff’s character, a plant from a rival glee club sent to toy with Rachel’s heart, might turn out to be gay. Which might turn out to be true – but that doesn’t make the writer’s wrong-headed argument anymore palatable.
Murphy’s boycott campaign, in addition to inspiring the Facebook page, has generated publicity that Setdoodeh notes has led to nasty emails and blog posts. “It went viral,” he wrote in a follow-up article. “You can disagree with me if you like, but when was the last time you saw a movie starring a gay actor? The point of my essay was not to disparage my own community, but to examine an issue that is being swept under the rug.”
The boycott call is excessive – the provocative piece showed its power by spurring debate. The “Modern Family” and Newsweek episodes show the power of Facebook and the Internet to give folks an almost instant say in entertainment-related issues that can go beyond, say, demanding a hosting gig for a beloved 88-year-old actress.
Meanwhile, we’ll chillax and wait for Cam and Mitchell’s first TV kiss, which, we expect, will be like most everything else on “Modern Family”: as funny as it is sweet.

Renewing your driver's license can be a pain in the butt these days, but the task has caused quite a stir for one Florida woman.
Ashlee Lineberger of Englewood recently mailed in her $48 renewal fee for a new license and when she got her new state-issued ID back in the mail, she noticed that she was no longer from Englewood.
The license said she lived in "Eat Ass," Florida. We're still looking for it on the map.
