Moscow court gives first-time backing to gay activists

Gay rights activists are celebrating what they call ‘a judicial breakthrough’ after Moscow City Court sided with them in a legal battle with the city government.

The court has given local authorities 14 days to justify banning a gay pride parade to be held in Moscow in May.

Parade organizers say the decision may be connected to their having forwarded their case to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasburg earlier in August, though Strasbourg has not yet considered the case.

Russian gay rights activists say it is the first time their arguments have been heard in a local court.

However, this was not the first victory for gay rights in Russia this month. Two weeks ago, a district court in Moscow overruled a decision by a prefect to close a gay club in the city's northern section.
