On July 23, 2010 in St. John’s Newfoundland, the provincial Lieutenant Governor John Crosbie hosted a private function at the Government House for 50 members of the local LGBT community to celebrate their achievements.  This event is reported to be the first time in Canadian history that a political figure with the ranks of the higher political authorities has publicly recognized members of the LGBT community for their work in the North American country.
