A new Gallup poll says 70 percent of Americans support allowing openly gay people to serve in the military.

Included in the majority are 60 percent of Republicans, 57 percent of weekly churchgoers and strong majorities of liberals and moderates.

The survey’s results may have heightened significance in light of President Obama’s nomination of Solicitor General Elena Kagan, who has opposed the ban on gays in the military, to the Supreme Court.

The poll results were based on telephone interviews with 1,029 adults between May 3 and 6.
